Last night Connor McDavid became the 4th fastest player to reach 1000 points in NHL history. Which is pretty incredible when you consider it. But how will history see Connor McDavid be look at in history?
In my mind there are 4 players on the Mount Rushmore of the NHL. Gretzky, Howe, Lemieux and Orr. Those four are just in their own league. Let's call them the All-timers. They are royalty.
Below the four there are the "Superstars"..Crosby, MacKinnon, Yzerman, Hawerchuk, Jagr, Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, etc..... That is where I would put McDavid I think.
When it comes to skills, I would put McDavid at the top of the Superstars...but should he be in the All-timers grouping? For me that would require winning a Cup..maybe more than one.
I have heard some serious debate that Crosby belongs in that group. He has won at every opportunity. ...Will Ovechkin rise to that level when he topples Gretzky? Does the best goal scorer in NHL history automatically raise Ovechkin?
I honestly don't know. In my opinion those four still stand alone..
