There was some concern that the power play was falling off. Tonight, every goal was a power play goal. For Detroit, Debrincat in the first and Raymond in overtime.
The defensive play was much better in the first 2 periods but for whatever reason the third period sees Detroit get outshot badly. It was a late faceoff violation that put Calgary on the advantage and led to the 1-1 tie.
It’s hard to say enough about Talbot. He has stepped up for the team many times. The team needs to reciprocate a bit more in terms of stronger defense in their zone.
More than anything, last year’s excitement had a bit of a caveat. It seemed like Detroit had to score 4 or more to win. Winning a 1-0 or 2-1 game is a grind and an important step. The team still has issues to address to be sure, but there seemed to be a lot of good efforts. Seider is shooting the puck more and getting in on offense. Larkin seems to be able to skate the perimeter of the O zone and get defenders out of position. All good signs.
This home stand was opined as being particularly important to the future of LaLonde. So far so good as it were. The team seemed a bit cleaner, more quick movement of the puck out of the zone but not enough elevated shots in tight.
Debrincat and Raymond had a good night, both with a goal and an assist. Seider added another assist to his stats. Calgary is a vastly different team with a lot of turnover. The “snarl” of Tkachuk wasn’t there (and wasn’t necessarily missed) so this was a fairly clean game. Let me know your thoughts and if this team is turning a corner or simply getting a break in the schedule after a difficult start.
