Coming off of a shellacking at the hands of the defending Stanley Cup champions in Florida, the Winnipeg Jets didn't have to wait long to get a second crack against the Florida Panthers. Tuesday night, in front of a sold out crowd at the Canada Life Centre, the Jets responded with a statement 6-3 win of their own. Connor Hellebuyck got the win in net.

First Period:

The game began in the same manner in which the previous one ended with the Panthers controlling the play. However, as the period went on, the Jets got better. With under 6 minutes left in the period, the Jets got goals from Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele 3 minutes apart to give the home side a 2-0 lead heading into the 1st intermission and the capacity crowd on its feet.

Second Period:

After not getting a goal in the 2 consecutive losses, the Jets PP produced a goal when Scheifele buried a cross ice pass from Nikolaj Ehlers to give the Jets a commanding 3-0 lead just under 4 minutes into the middle frame. Next, with under 3 minutes left in the period, the Panthers got on the board when A.J. Greer got credit for a goal that deflected off of Adam Lowry and went in the Jets net. The second period would end with the Jets leading 3-1.

Third Period:

The final period was one worth staying up for on a weeknight. First, Sam Reinhert scored on the PP to bring the Panthers to within 1 goal. But 2 minutes later, the ice became littered with hats when Scheifele scored his 3rd goal of the night shortly after another Jets PP had expired. With under 4 minutes left in the game, on the PP and with the goalie pulled, Matthew Tkachuk scored to bring the score to 4-3. That would be as close as the Panthers would get as Morgan Barron would get 2 shorthanded empty net goals to make the final score 6-3 for the Jets.

Some takeaways from the game:

Coming off of their first two game losing streak of the season, the Jets top line came to play in this game. The line of Connor-Scheifele-Vilardi combined for 6 points on the night. Connor and Scheifele are now tied for the team lead in goals with 12 each. As of now, both are on pace for 50 goals. Scheifele had his 9th career Hat Trick.

As great as the first line was, the second line was not as great 5 on 5. In addition to being hemmed in their own zone for long stretches, both Vlad Namestnikov and Cole Perfetti took needless offensive zone penalties in the 3rd period that gave the Panthers life lines. Something to keep an eye on going forward if Kevin Cheveldayoff will take a homerun swing and try to bring in another big 2nd line centre before the trade deadline.

The Jets record is now 16-3 to start the season. They will now go on a 6 game road trip, their longest of the season which begins friday night in Pittsburgh.
