1) Mondays with Meltzer: In this week's Monday edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus and I take a look at the Flyers offseason, which has not been full of subtractions and additions beyond the Cam Atkinson buyout and the signing of rookie winger Matvei Michkov. We discuss why that is the case and what effect that will have on the upcoming season and beyond. Particular subjects include: Konecny extension silence, Fedotov extension, NHL Draft, players rumored as possible trade pieces (Scott Laughton, Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost) remaining with the Flyers, the looming decision over the next year whether to extend John Tortorella as head coach or set a succession plan before a lame-duck season in 2025-26 and much more.
2) July 22 Flyers Alumni birthday: Gord Hynes (1966).
3) Today in Flyers History: July 22.
1974: After the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup, head coach Fred Shero threatened to retire from hockey and pursue a law degree (for which he'd been taking correspondence courses). On July 22, 1974, Shero signs a three-year extension to his Flyers contract.
2010: Darroll Powe signs a one-year, $725,00 contract.
2021: In need of salary cap space, the Flyers trade defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and both second-round (Artem Duda) and seventh-round (Miguel Tourigny) draft picks to the Arizona Coyotes. The only return to the Flyers is Philadelphia not having to retain any salary on Gostibehere.
