Quick Hits: August 23, 2024
1) In the August 23 edition of the Flyers Daily podcast, host Jason Myrtetus begins his pre-camp "bold predictions" series for Flyers players. In this 23-minute installment, Jason gives his predictions for Travis Konecny, Matvei Michkov and Owen Tippett. I'm sure that Jason I will discuss season goals for these and other key players when we record the next Mondays with Meltzer edition of the podcast. We record every Sunday night.
2) As part of the still-ongoing renovations at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, the Flyers had the media room area spruced up considerably. I was there the other day for the first time since the earlier portion of the offseason. Immediately, my eye scanned the many additions to the room that honor not only the annual winners of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Class Guy award but also highlights of the hockey print and broadcast media in Flyers history.
There's a tribute to Al Morganti and the late Jay Greenberg's elections to the Hockey Hall of Fame's writers wing (Elmer Ferguson Award) and to the legendary Gene Hart and Bill Clement's inductions into the broadcasters' section (Foster Hewitt Memorial Award). On the wall above the window to the Flyers practice rink, there are photos of Morganti with the late Pelle Lindbergh after Pelle won the 1984-85 Vezina trophy and the late John Brogan (longtime Flyers publications editor/writer) interviewing rookie Bill Barber after his 1972 introductory press conference.
A lot of care and attention to detail clearly went into honoring this aspect of Flyers history. It made me genuinely happy to walk into the room and see, for the first time, how much it's been visually and symbolically spruced up.
Flyers press room in Voorhees looks awesome now. Thrilled there is a photo of Pelle Lindbergh with @nufced and a tribute to Al and Jay Greenberg as HHOF inductees along with Gene Hart, Doc and @BillClement10 . The late John Brogan 1972 Pic with Bill Barber. pic.twitter.com/Dyv1m4lPWQ
3) The Flyers posted a one-minute video highlighting to 2024 Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp. I so look forward to that event each year, not just seeing the Flyers Alumni who serve as the coaches but especially in reconnecting with many of the yearly attendees who have become friends over the years: Brian George, Dan Rieber, Jordan Yuter, the Jaffe brothers, Phil Brady, Brad MacQuarrie, Geoff Patterson, Matt Steinberg and many more.
This year, the 10th annual edition, was the best one yet. Rob Baer, Bob Kelly and Brad Marsh do yeoman work in making the camp special year after year. For an overview of this year's camp, shoutouts to some of the top players, some pics from Camp and more, click here

Ten years of turning Flyers fantasy into reality. 🏒
4) Come 2025, there are two brand new Flyers Alumni fundraising events. We'll have much more about these in months to come. As always, all proceeds raised from Flyers Alumni events go to support the Alumni's charitable and community-driven programs such as "Every Child Deserves a Bike", the holiday season "12 Days of Christmas" giving program, the Alumni's tireless support of the Flyers Warriors veterans hockey, Flyers PowerPlay power wheelchair and Flyers Special Hockey programs, monetary donations and/or other support efforts (organizing volunteer time, for example) at local schools, renovating the Flyers Alumni room at Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey, sponsoring a youngster via the Sunshine Foundation and supporting various local small charities and community service organizations.
* Alumni Weekend Hat Trick: Next June, for the first time, the Alumni will host three fundraising events over a three day span: a pickball tournament in Malvern, a walk-run-bicycle event in Conshocken, and the annual Alumni Golf tournament at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington. Over the three-day span, 75 or more Flyers Alumni will be in Philly to participate in one, two, or all three of the public events. There will also be a private Alumn-only get-together.
* Golfing in the Emerald Isle: Next summer, the Flyers Alumni will host a once-in-a-lifetime golfing vacation to Ireland. Full Itinerary information and fan registration details will be announced in early 2025.
