The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has drafted and developed a number of youngsters currently playing in the NHL (Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander), but the focus of prospect development under former GM Kyle Dubas and the last few seasons under Director of Amateur Scouting Wes Clark seemed to be on skill players, while GM Brad Treliving has begun to transition with a focus on young players with size.
As we did last year, we will rank the club’s top prospects over the upcoming weeks based on their progress in either the NCAA, CHL, Europe, ECHL or AHL and their potential to make the Leafs roster and contribute in the future.
Youngsters like Bobby McMann, Joseph Woll, Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg, and top-rated Matthew Knies have graduated, but here is a list of players eligible for the list who have not played more than 40 NHL games and are 25 years old or younger:

To say that Johansson was a surprising pick in the fourth round would be an understatement. The 18-year-old blueliner has pro hockey bloodlines (his older brothers were drafted by the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings and his cousin is NHL forward Alexander Wennberg), but is absent from all of the pre-draft scouting guides and was not on the NHL Central Scouting rankings.
The 6'1", 143 lb. blueliner had health issues as a teenager that slowed his progress, and he has played the last two seasons in the junior level of the Leksands SHL club, posting only eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) in 34 games last season. Despite a slight build that would be more conducive to being an offensive defenseman, Johansson has been described as an excellent skating, defensive blueliner with a penchant for hard-hitting.
It is expected that the 18-year-old will spend the next few years trying to build on his frame and gain strength, which will be prerequisites for having any chance of developing into a professional in the SHL and perhaps in North America down the road.
