There were reports last week that the Toronto Maple Leafs were kicking tires on veteran winger Max Pacioretty. Thus far, there has been no new news on that front, but Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicated on Tuesday that the club has extended a professional tryout to forward Steven Lorentz.
The 28-year-old Lorentz was a seventh-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015. After four seasons in the OHL with Peterborough and three seasons in the minors, he made his debut with the Hurricanes in 2020. He was sent to San Jose as part of the Brent Burns in 2022, and the next season, he was dealt to Florida in the deal that sent Anthony Duclair to the Sharks.
The Kitchener, ON native had one goal in 38 games for the Panthers last season and three points (2 goals, 1 assist) in 16 playoff games in Florida’s run to the Stanley Cup. The 6’4”, 213 lb. forward fits in with the Leafs interest in players with size and could be a replacement for former Leaf Noah Gregor, who was added on a PTO last September.
