News came out over the weekend that veteran blueliner Mark Giordano wants to continue his career and according to agent Ritch Winter in a piece from Sportsnet, four teams (Calgary, Edmonton, Buffalo and Toronto) have expressed interest.

The common thread in all of the reports regarding veterans looking for deals is that a number of teams are interested. Last week, we heard that three teams were interested in Max Pacioretty, and he is yet to be signed. Three clubs were interested in Filip Zadina, and he signed with a team in Switzerland.

It is an agent’s job to find a home for his client, so putting something out there like four teams are interested is understandable, but the report even indicated that Calgary did not have much interest since they are in the midst of a rebuild.

Buffalo does not add up since they have four top-four left-shot defensemen, and have nine blueliners with NHL experience. Interest from Edmonton adds up since the Oilers lost Philip Broberg to St. Louis and their defense is weak, but the likely play here is a return to Toronto, depending on what happens with the reported deal involving veteran Jani Hakanpaa.

The Leafs supposedly signed the big Finn in early July, but then reports emerged that he had a knee injury that would likely not allow him to continue his NHL career. The deal was not registered with the league, but Toronto has been mum on the subject for over two months.

Could Giordano be waiting for this situation to clear up to hopefully re-sign with Toronto?
