Even though this was just the first preseason game for the squad, there were some cringeworthy moments from Detroit. Holl is not handling the puck well, Gustafsson on D, Husso’s 2nd period saw 2 goals on 4 shots. To be fair, Detroit had a solid first period in terms of Husso who shut down 11 shots but the 2nd saw a total of six and no defensive help on Chicago’s 2 goals.
Detroit’s first goal early on from Motte was a hard working depth line goal with a pass in tight tapped in. Detroit was outshot 11-8 in the first and scored 1, outshot Chicago in the second 14-6 that saw a tying goal from Petry after an impressive play but Mazur at the side of the net on the power play. The grinding forward did a diving poke check that got the puck to the blue line and was wristed in.
In the 3rd, Raymond had a beautiful power play snipe after a cross ice pass from Larkin (power play) that saw him on the right side picking the near side corner. The insurance tally came from Maata who skated in and wristed home a shot with 5:16 left. Both teams changed goalies after the 2nd. Cossa looked good stopping 9 shots and Weeks mirrored Detroit’s 2nd period giving up 2 goals on 6 shots after Mrazek had looked like he was heating up in the 2nd.
If you watched the stream, the Chicago announcers were very complimentary of Marco Kasper. He looked good on the PK and was in and around the play quite a bit. Though Seider wasn’t on the ice, they acknowledged the new deals for Raymond and Seider stating that Seider was a stud top Dman. The crew was very good to Detroit and obviously had a good 2nd as Chicago cashed in.
Of course this is just game one of the preseason. Edvinsson had problems with his edges in the 3rd and some passes that were bouncing pretty hard but was definitely involved in the play. He certainly got a “love tap” from ex Wing Tyler Bertuzzi in the first that rattled the boards.
A final note was that Raymond, like Larkin, was able to do the circumference skate on the power play. He’s really growing in confidence and that move from down low to get the trapezoid out of sorts is one that can burn you if you’re not careful. A fun first preseason game. Husso hasn’t played in the NHL in a while and may need time but it looked like he checked out in the 2nd. If Kasper has a preseason that reflects what he was doing defensively at pretty decent speed he may be a candidate to grab a spot or at least high up on the call list. Too soon to know anything, but it was a fun watch.
First Period Detroit goals:
Just 1:10 in Veleno got the puck to Watson (in O zone) who found Motte on the far side of the net for a tap in. 1-0 Wings

At 6:50 Hawks tied it up as Smith got his own rebound and scored as Gustafsson looked weak on coverage and Husso was down and out. 1-1
At 9:03 a lost faceoff after an icing saw the Hawks grab the lead. Maata terrible coverage on Teravainen who sends a nice backhander past Husso who had a good first but looks awful right now. 2-1 CHI
Wings finally get a power play and with 4 seconds left Nygard ends up with a trip on Teravainen
With 6:16 left Wings outshooting this period 11-4 but Chicago has scored twice. Husso just awful and no D support on the two goals.
