The Los Angeles Kings were dealt a major blow in last night’s preseason contest against the Vegas Golden Knights. After a hard fall into the boards, Drew Doughty injured his foot, was helped off the ice, and didn’t return to the game.

While the team has yet to announce anything officially, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that an initial x-ray shows a left ankle fracture. Per Seravalli, more imaging was scheduled for today.

Obviously, the hope is that the injury isn’t any worse than a fracture. It’s a really tough break for Doughty, but it’s also a massive blow for Los Angeles if he misses extended time.

The Kings will already have two very young defensemen behind Doughty on the right side of their defense group in Jordan Spence and Brandt Clarke, and it could immediately force both of them to take on a larger role than anticipated right from the get-go. Spence does have about 100 games of NHL experience, but spent last season in a pretty sheltered role. Meanwhile, Clarke has played a total of 25 NHL games.

It also comes just after it was announced Arthur Kaliyev will be out indefinitely with a fractured clavicle.

So while it's a waiting game for now to hear about a timeline for Doughty to return, it's a tough break for the Kings, just ahead of the start of the season.
