Last night’s contest against Ottawa seemed to see the projected regular lineup (for the most part) fail to get the power play clicking and surrender the lead (and the game) to Ottawa. Tonight’s lineup against Toronto seems to be bottom 6 forwards, rookies, and fringe defensemen. Yet, these are the players that seem to be taking the preseason the most seriously (opinion).
It feels safe to say that, for the most part, rookies have failed to adequately impress with a glaring exception. Kasper has made an impression that will at least have conversations as to whether he could get 2nd or 3rd line minutes and push someone onto the waiver wire. Some of you have been equally impressed with the 20 year old, while there are many salient reasons to have the first rounder start on the top line in Grand Rapids and be first on the call up list. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to see a 5 or 6 game “audition” in the regular season with players available to waive that aren’t likely to be picked up.
Another name I wouldn’t mind seeing grab a spot is Austin Watson. If you’re talking about bottom 6 physicality (please don’t get ejected tonight) he certainly still seems willing to step in and step up. Again, dealers choice on who would have to hit waivers.
Tonight’s wrap up is one where the effort is going to be the focus. Start on time, kill penalties, do what you can to make an impression. Danielson had a moment last night where he showed a nice release and a puck that skittered wide of the net after hitting the goalie. He tends to overpass and it would be good to see him direct more pucks on net. Mazur will be up sooner or later but Kasper still seems to have been at the front of the line in terms of standing out.
Let me know your thoughts as things wind down on the preseason and who you think may be a surprise add when the opening night rosters are released.
