The first period was pretty good for Detroit, the second and much of the third saw Toronto completely take over. The box score shows Detroit with 1 shot on goal in the second, but the announcers had zero shots in a span of 25 minutes. Regardless, possession was certainly on Toronto’s side.
Again, yes it’s preseason, but it has been a disappointing preseason in terms of seeing the NHL regulars put games together. The “grinders”, rookies and PTOs seemed to have a higher sense of urgency. We’ll see how things look as puck drops on Detroit’s season opener next week.
Husso made some big saves, but there didn’t seem to be much to indicate anyone grabbing a job that wasn’t already “penciled in”. Copp had a goal and an assist. Depending on how the office feels, rookies slated for Grand Rapids will be heading down and at least one person I spoke to believes Watson will get a contract offer to start the season in Grand Rapids.
You can see today’s list of training camp releases below. Expect to see a steady flow as the team gets the roster contract and cap compliant. Unless a deal is in the works, or if Kasper and/or Watson have gotten some momentum behind them we can likely expect the roster to fall into place the way it looked after free agency was finished (with the exception of the 3 RFAs that signed right around training camp).
It’s up to the players to make it work. We’ll see how they hit the ice for the new season.
