How about that for a season opener?
The Winnipeg Jets went into Edmonton and absolutely pummeled the Edmonton Oilers 6-0 in both team's season opener. No one could have scripted a better season opener for the Jets. It was a full team effort as well.
The Adam Lowry line started things off in the same manner they finished off the last regular season. They suppressed Connor McDavid's line and put the Jets up 2-0 in the first period. From there, Rasmus Kupari continued his stellar pre-season play with his first regular season goal in a Jets uniform. There was a goal from the defence when Dylan Samberg joined the rush in a timely manner and put the puck past Stuart Skinner with a perfectly placed shot. From there, the Jets PP went 2-3 with goals from Kyle Connor, who has now scored in seven consecutive season openers and from Mark Scheifele. When the Oilers did get some decent looks, Connor Hellebuyck was there to shut the door and get his first shutout of the season in Game 1. The Jets PK killed off the lone penalty they received.
Reflecting back on the thirteen previous season openers, I can't recall one that was as impressive as this one was. The Jets now have two home games against division rivals in Chicago and Minnesota. Overall, the next seven games are against teams that did not make the playoffs last year. That presents a real opportunity to have a strong start to the season and bank some early points in the standings. Home opener is on Friday. Canada Life Centre will be rocking.
