I don’t mind eating some crow (as long as I have the Colonel’s recipe) as a tipped in shot by Compher held up as the winning tally in Detroit’s 3-0 shutout win over Nashville. Outshot 40-22, another bite of crow came as Talbot was making point blank saves and getting some help from the D to clear out the crease. Seider potentially stopped 2 goals with a leg block and a clearing of the crease earlier in the game.

Copp added to the lead with a strange bounce off of a Raymond shot hit his skate, hit Saros and went in the net. A little more crow as I’d called for him to be waived in favor of Kasper. The final bite came from Holl’s performance. This may have been one of his best in a red sweater. Edvinsson was driving in on offense and has the ability to dish a nice pass on the backhand, and the tandem worked well together. Johansson didn’t look out of place as family flown in from Sweden watched.

Despite the massive shot differential, Detroit was making defensive plays. Blocks, takeaways, hits, leaning players off of the puck. Veleno looked strong with a few of his net drives and even Berggren got in a lick or two. Still, if this were the Nashville blog, it would feel like highway robbery. Well, it was.

Talbot just seemed dialed in and ready to go. The forwards were better at providing some D zone coverage but there were still point blank opportunities that were shut down. Raymond played a late shift with his stick being disposed and he still stayed on players defensively. There were good things happening.

This win is a big deal for this opening stretch. Nashville has some serious power in the lineup. Solid goaltending, a captain that plays above his height on the blue line, O’Reilly, Stamkos, Forsberg. For the second time in his career (and in a new role) Barry Trotz is the best thing that has happened for the franchise. They still have cap space enough to add a significant piece should it come available.

Compher’s tip in, though not a power play goal, gives some indication of what he can do in front of the net. It was very close to being a high stick, and may not have survived a challenge (hard to tell on the angles) but he tracked a shot from the blue line and knocked it in. Copp’s goal was a “go buy a lottery ticket” bizarre twist. However, he was strong in the game. He and Compher may be the two best defensive forwards of the bunch but ironically had both goals scored with someone in net.

Let me know your thoughts. The wide chasm in shot totals may not have told the whole story but Talbot still had to make some big saves. Was Holl a sharper version than what we saw last season? If Fischer is out, do you waive anyone or put Petry on LTIR for a callup? How did you see the first win of the season for Detroit.

1st Period Detroit goals:
No goals. Detroit outshot badly but seeing better breakout passes. Edvinsson very good dishes on the backhand. Seider is just hitting everything in sight

Shots: 17-8 NASH
Score: 0-0

2nd Period Detroit goals:

1:02 into into the 2nd, it looks like Compher tipped a shot from Chiarot as Nashville contemplated a challenge. Goal stands(Seider with 2nd assist). 1-0 DET. *Detroit is getting some steals and that helped keep play alive.

* big saves by Talbot, at least 2 goals in game stopped by Seider. Holl playing as well as I can remember since coming to Detroit.

Shots: 27-18 NASH
Score: 1-0 DET

3rd Period Detroit goals:

At 6:35, despite being outshot 31-18, a shot from Raymond went off of Copp’s skate (no kicking motion) hit the pipe, hit Saros and went in. Eddy with the 2nd apple. 2-0 DET

Nashville had pulled the goalie for the final 3+ minutes. With 20 seconds left Larkin stole the puck from Nyquist in the neutral zone and scored an empty net tally to seal it.

Shots: 40-22 NASH
Score: 3-0 DET
