Ville Husso was waived yesterday to make room for what LaLonde called “a veteran forward”. The guess in the blog was that Watson would be the callup. It looks like that’s where things are at.
Watching some footage from Utah vs. NYR a couple things stood out. First, New York can turn it on and fill the net. They ended up grabbing an OT loss after erasing a 3 goal deficit. Second, there was a bit of a brawl. With Shesterkin looking for a rumored 12m x 8 deal next year, even a 5m cap bump would indicate that things are going to change for this team. They’ve added physicality and are looking to make some waves this year.
Detroit’s win came on the back of Talbot’s 40 saves. There were better defensive moments, but a shutout on 40 against is a fairly clear indicator that your goalie saw more rubber than the Belle Tire factory.
This opening schedule is no joke. The team is already in a conference with the cup champs in Florida along with recent back to back champs in Tampa Bay. Boston has gotten bigger on the back end (enter sir mix a lot) and Toronto wants what could be the final year of the “core four” to be a strong one. In short, Detroit will spend the majority of their time against teams that have high expectations in the East.
No clue what tonight will bring, but the D zone coverage has got to be strong and the power play needs to get going. Stay out of the box and stop trying to draw penalties. Kane, Raymond and Larkin (empty net notwithstanding) are looking to get on the board. We’ll see the boys try and grab one but it will take a yeomen’s effort in defense and some focused offense.
