Preview: Stars @ Capitals

Pete DeBoer's Dallas Stars (4-0-0) will try to remain undefeated on the 2024-25 season as they take on Spencer Carbury's Washington Capitals (1-1-0) on Thursday evening. Game time at Capital One Arena is 6:00 p.m. CDT.

The Stars are coming off a perfect homestand. After shutting out the New York Islanders (3-0) and Seattle Kraken (2-0) on Saturday and Sunday, Dallas came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits on Tuesday to earn a 3-2 (3-1) shootout victory over the San Jose Sharks.

On the injury front, forward Tyler Seguin is dealing with a day-to-day injury while defenseman Matt Dumba is on a week-to-week basis. Mavrik Bourque made his season debut on Tuesday in Seguin's absence.

The Capitals opened the season at home with a 5-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils and a 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights. A three-goal eruption by the Caps in the second period spurred the win over Vegas. Alex Ovechkin hit the 700-assist milestone for his Hall of Fame shoo-in NHL career.

The anticipated goalie matchup on Thursday will pit Casey DeSmith (shutout vs. Seattle) against Charlie Lindgren.

Oettinger Earns Eight-Year Extension

The Stars announced on Thursday that the team has signed 25-year-old goaltender Jake Oettinger to an eight-year contract extension, kicking in for the 2025-26 season. The new contract, worth a total gross of $66 million, carries an average annual value (cap hit) of $8.25 million. Oettinger can become a restricted free agent after the 2032-33 season.
