the city didn't sanction it. it was never in the proposal that the city accepted. the artist snuck it in without authorization (cowardly thing to do.)

the city had the artist change it.

- RealityChecker

Originally approved by the city, after complaints from the police union the artist changed it to say it was censored by the city and police dept, with the blessing of the city counsel.

“It came as a surprise to us,” said Bill Eisenhauer, head of engagement at the city. “That wasn’t in the original concept and when we became aware of the acronym, we reached out to the artists to discuss.”

Couple things and then your point for the win!

The police are there to enforce the law, they should to be held more accountable for respecting the law then civilians. That's what's different between them and say the medical profession

Why defund? We can call it other things, like reallocate funds, etc...

Because police budgets are the size that they are because they are currently responsible for many things not directly related to safety issues. Like mental health, heck as an EMR we'd have to wait for the RCMP to show up if it was a drug call, a social worker would have be more appropriate(magic mushrooms).

Right now the RCMP is funded to deal with mental health issues, take that responsibility and funding away from the police and like you suggest, set up a special organization to deal with it.

Lol, now that I think about it, you've just suggested a viable and reasonable way to defund the police and set up an alternative system. Good job, high five!
.

I am not a SJW, by the way.

Fair, I will counter with the police do in fact enforce the law, it may not be to your standards but they do in fact enforce the law as their primary duty. As is the same for the medical profession in regards to their mandate. Each profession is bound by ethics and guidelines, each profession has individuals that have crossed those lines.

Police budgets are woefully under funded...IMO, I don't sit on the police board for any level of government but I would be interested to see the break down for police budgets relating to mental health issues.

What are we talking about here, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, what are your expectations for defunding?

I've known many, many police officers in my lifetime on a personal level.

Many are good, some are bad. I do find the profession itself seems to draw many people with an obsession with power.

In the last several years due to the opiod pandemic, firefighters being the first to respond (most times) to emergency situations have to deal with medical issues eg overdoses. This is not what they are hired to do and although they have some training, they are not medical professionals who should be dealing with this stuff.

No one is saying, defund the fire department and hire more medical professionals to deal with these emergency situations.

Why not? because it would be a stupid thing to say. Even if they would not have to deal with medical emergencies, they still have an adequate amount of "work" to cover.

Defund the police is just another way of saying "punish the police through economic terms." Fair enough but let's not conflate defunding with mental health issues. It's overwhelmingly evident that mental health issues are underfunded and the residual effects on society are left to the police (and others - public as well) to deal with on an emergency basis.

I think we can all agree that increased funding to support mental health issues are needed. However, this shouldn't come at the expense of police funding.

Let's be honest: the police will not be left with nothing to do if they are not obligated to deal with mental health issues. Their priorities in enforcement will change and they will be able to focus on other issues that as of right now don't receive enough attention (money and staffing wise.)

I'd also like to add that a lot of the mental health emergencies are also physical threat emergencies. That means that any additional agency tasked with dealing with these will also need security personnel. A social worker alone won't be able to deal with this stuff. Effectively making necessary having "security" personnel to help the mental health staff.

Finally, although we all (mostly) agree that mental health issues require more funding, what we are actually saying is that government needs to expand/grow.

What we are saying is that we need to expand the bureaucracy. This is the tangible effect when we say "increased funding should go to.... x, y and z." That's just reality. It's naive to think (and I'm not saying you) that taking money from one area to fund another will be a zero sum gain. That's not the way the world or government works.

You can't say that you want a sunny, dark day with a nice heavy dry rain.

It's going to be interesting to see how Surrey makes out with it's new city police force. What a sh*t show that town is, has been since I was a kid.

It was a good place to pick up Trollop's though

After Republican leadership had a chance to digest what happened at the bizarro news conference, reality has set in...

“The General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden that the Trump administration is ready to begin the formal transition process”.

Trump still tweeting but it’s all meaningless now.

The damage is done.

I wouldn't be surprised if the republicans had Trump killed after he's out of office, let the theorists blame it on the democrats.

He's worth much more as a martyr at this point than anything else. Arranging his fake death and getting caught is much more Trumpian.
