I agree but to get everyone on board is where the struggle is. It's the areas that won't be strict that will allow the second wave to take hold. As noted earlier a significant percentage of inflicted will be asymptomatic. Unless all jurisdictions on both sides of the border shut things down, I fear we will only get a temporary reprieve.
I only emphasize the US but really all countries need to be vigilant because once we have it under control the borders will be slowly opened.
As Bill Gates just wrote in the Washington Post: Shutdown anywhere means shutdown everywhere. - RealityChecker
This is where I was talking about Nationalism the other day. You can only control what's within your control.....for as long as you can.
What are the cost of goods going to be coming from other countries ? Do we really want free market on our goods?
We do have the ability to provide for ourselves, let's reset our local (national) market before we go into the world. BC can grow a lot more than blueberries. |

i understand the desire to be a self-sufficient country especially in these troubled times. it would be wonderful if we could produce everything we need and want for our society.
i don't think it's possible however. it's not even about the escalation in prices that would result in the things we produce. simply put, if we put barriers to entry on goods that we produce, other countries (especially the US) will retaliate with tarriffs/barriers to entry on goods that we need to import. this would cripple the economy.
this is a very long conversation and i acknowledge that we are both just scratching the surface. i would, however, point out that one of the main reasons that the liberals (chretien) were able to hand harper a huge surplus (that he squandered pretty quickly) was because of the free trade agreement of the 90s. |

So it is now reported that over a million cases worldwide with 51,000 deaths (Al Jazeera), that's reported cases.
I really wonder what would be the real number, I believe China is under reporting, same as Russia.
I just read China is going back to another lock down after new cases have emerged near Hubei province |

It’s a small county, for China, that’s locking down, not the whole country. The problem, as you mentioned, is you an be a carrier and not even know it thus spreading the virus.
“A county in central China has been put under lockdown again after a flare-up in coronavirus cases, pointing to the difficulty of sustaining outbreak containment in the face of carriers who show no signs of sickness.
Jia county, whose population numbers around 640,000, issued a directive on Wednesday asking all residential compounds to be sealed off and those visiting and leaving homes to produce identity cards, wear masks and submit to temperature checks. Car traffic will also be limited.
The move came after residents were unnerved by an incident in which a woman was infected after she visited a doctor who carried the virus but showed no signs of being sick. Researchers are finding that these stealthy carriers can play an outsized role in spreading the pathogen to others, since there’s no easy way to tell they’re infected.” |

Did you see the helmets the Chinese military were wearing with thermal scans effective up to 5 metres?
I wonder how many of those they have?
I also just read on global that 85% of Canada's military is in self-isolation. I imagine they'll be out deploying supplies soon enough.

You can't rely put a timeline on it. The PM is correct when he suggests projections are kind of useless. The virus's destruction and persistence will depend largely on how we handle it as individuals, a nation and a world.

I think you mean projections are like the PM...useless
But yes, that was just a best guess given our response thus far in Canada to the virus and the timeline in Wuhan. |

The timeline in Wuhan has been under much stricter measures than the timeline in Canada. They locked that poop down.
Here in Canada we're all still getting out for groceries, going to work etc. Subways and mass transit are still happening.
I don't think they're even comparable. |

Our country’s population is only twice of that one single city spread over the second largest country by landmass, so there is that, our density is much much less. As I said, an uneducated guess on my part.
“ Wuhan ([ù.xân] (About this soundlisten); simplified Chinese: 武汉; traditional Chinese: 武漢) is the capital city of Hubei province in the People's Republic of China. It is the largest city in Hubei and the most populous city in Central China, with a population of over 11 million, the ninth most populous Chinese city, and one of the nine National Central Cities of China.”
Population (2018)
• Sub-provincial city 11,081,000
• Urban (2018) 8,896,900
• Metro 19 million |

I understand that, but we're still moving it around. The reason they shut it down initially is because they contained it, we've done nothing of the sort.
We still go out and buy food or other items or work out there and then come back to our families. The supply network is travelling throughout the continent interacting with each other then coming home. Hell, I have a permit to travel between provinces as part of my job as the provinces here have had the borders shut down for some time.
It was interesting to see that 85% of our military is currently in isolation. I wouldn't be surprised to see them out there distributing food and supplies at some point. Flattening the curve is the initial goal, but if we go on like this it's going to take a really, really long time to get things back to any sense of normalcy. Stopping the spread ASAP is essential.

To All,
We have all been reminded twice recently of the critical role railroads play in our national infrastructure. This is a highly specialized workforce that carries goods from coast to coast and through all of our borders. Unfortunately, it is also a medium throughout which any virus can be easily spread across our national network. The same can be said for our entire transportation industry and the supply chain in general. In order to protect not only the workforce but more importantly the general population I strongly suggest implementing stricter measures along the transportation network and the supply chain. Normally, there is a proper channel for these discussions. However, I voiced those concerns a couple of weeks ago through proper channels and little has come of it. We don’t have the time for prolonged discussions between workforce and business through the traditional methods and as a concerned citizen rather than a teamster I am pleading with all of you to act now. The virus’s spread is rapid and the response is slow.
As a transportation employee in the railroad sector I will outline a few areas that are of tremendous concern.
-Members from different terminals are still sharing rest facilities. I’ve directly been in contact with people that I know from terminals in BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick via messenger, text or direct conversation over the past 36 hours in order to confirm these practices are still in place. We need to segregate the terminals in order to limit the spread of infection from terminal to terminal, town to town. Many towns throughout the network still have little or few known cases at this time yet they are sharing facilities with employees from emerging hot spots or that travel to them. This practice must cease immediately. Need I get into the idea that remote terminals are hubs for nearby reservations and other small communities that would be overwhelmed by rapid spread?
-We also do not have any supply of any type of personal protective mask. The dimensions of a locomotive cab are not large, and are often shared for up to 12 hours. Sometimes we must share a taxi. It is understandable that hospitals and health care workers take priority, but we also must protect our vital supply network.
- We are not currently testing throughout the network. I understand there has been a shortage of test kits, and a backlog of tests at the laboratories. Whereas I can’t attest to the validity of newer test kits that have emerged my understanding is that we now have test kits that are capable of quicker result times. I suggest implementing testing throughout the transportation network as community spread is by far the largest culprit. Considering that people are spreading the virus while being asymptomatic, I believe this is the only way to protect the workforce.
On a larger scale, I think we need to examine implementing testing at grocery stores especially among the employees and shift towards a delivery system instead of traditional shopping but i’ll let more qualified people than myself work towards a solution.
Thank You for your time and attention to these matters.

Well thought out. I foresee stricter measures coming in the near term. Will the measures vary by industry or sector based on your valid concerns? I'm not sure but I would think or at least hope all the issues and measures are discussed. You've mentioned before that it's better to go full bore now rather than delaying and dragging this out with half measures. Will that be a consensus amongst the feds and all provinces? |

Well written, hopefully you see some sort of response. You have a wide distribution of people, hopefully a couple take your safety concerns seriously and push those concerns to a higher level and demand action be taken. |

Rail is federal jurisdiction but I think it's in the best interest of all provinces to push for stricter measures. I fully believe we need to clamp down now or deal with this for the foreseeable future. |

Thanks, I don't think the higher levels will even necessarily read it. I'm hoping the local MP and MLA respond and push it higher. If not, I still have relatives. |

Is it wrong that i've given up on my mother?
She lives in a long term care home in London, Ontario. She was raised in BC and because of her I went there early and often which later led me to move there in my early 20's. We had to move her when she deteriorated and none of the kids lived there anymore.
She's old, has dementia (alzheimer's) , a history of bad asthma. I haven't seen her for over a year, was supposed to visit this past week but that clearly got kiboshed. It's hard to visit, the first day we spend a few hours together and she's mistrustful of who I am for the first half of the visit. After that she remembers me somewhat but I can only spend a couple of hours a day, even then it's difficult as we speak in circles quite a bit.
I personally think she's had a bad life for the past few years and would have considered euthanasia, knowing who she was and how proud she was vs what she is now.
I made peace with my mom's passing 4 years ago when my brother brought her out for a visit with her grandchildren. I said goodbye to her then. |

It is not wrong at all. She is in a care home being looked after by professionals. You’ve done what you can for her. She was not abandoned and left for dead.
With her Alzheimer’s it’s not always the best when family members show up because it can be very confusing and stressful for them. Alzheimer’s is the worst because the person you once knew is now gone.

I'm sorry to hear. No matter what action you take, you'll still have guilt, remorse and other complicated feelings. Allow yourself to go through those range of feelings but know that you've done the best you can for her and your family.
It's not wrong. |

You're not wrong.
I'm just starting that journey, as RC says there's all kind of feelings involved. Remembering them when they were strong and independent is a good way to approach it.
I didn't go see my Dad in his last days of suffering from cancer years ago. I didn't want to remember him hooked up to machines with tubes going everywhere. Every one has different ways of dealing with grief and saying goodbye. There isn't a wrong way, just your way. |

And there it is...
Trump “has a small personal financial interest” in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine, The New York Times reported Monday.
