No it wouldnt, a roster player needs to come off Habs books to clear cap space |

Man, that's a hefty price for me to pay but is it worth moving Alzner and adding a young, large 40 goal man for the RW? Maybe... - Brandon Smillie
If the 1st rounder ends up to be a Chipchura, McCarron or David Fischer then its actually a cheap price 😉 |

To me, it's clear MB has no issue dealing a 1st, 2nd, 3rd for offense right now, just add a top prospect to that and it should get a few conversations started? Adding Suzuki and Juulsen plus more picks should get ppl chatting if they need to make some big decisions for their own club, like the Jets appear they have to do. |

Agreed but we need to shed some salary in the deal ideally |

100% agree. I mentioned about $4 mill in the blog to even make a deal possible. Unless Laine wants that Aho money! |

I really really don't want to lose Suzuki. Honestly, even tough Poehling is more ready, I believe Suzuki as a higher ceiling offensively than Poehling (which I do like too).
Honestly I would prefer give more picks and less prospects if possible.
Maybe something like Drouin, Juulsen and 2x 1st picks? |

Not sure he's worth the Aho money, let alone more |

Goal scorers get the money though. It’s just how it is. |

I mean, I would do all picks but the Habs need to clear cap space too to make a deal happen. Plus the Jets would have to bring in something more than mid round 1sts to make sure they didn’t look inept to their fan base. Everything likely revolves around a blue chip prospect, almost half a draft worth of picks plus an NHL player or two. Imo of course. |

He's trending the wrong way in those goals and outside of scoring goals he doesn't do much well |

I'm not disagreeing on his potential...but not sure you pay that much for potential when the rest of the game is pretty flawed |

He needs a bridge deal since he might be like neon Dion and peaked in his first season... |

Only last year was on off year. No trend yet. You dont score 80 goals in your first 2 seasons without being CRAZY talented. |

Acquiring Laine isn't worth with how much you have to give up in trade value and in cap space to sign him as well. Even if we acquired him and signed him at 10 million a year it still leaves a massive hole at the more important defenseman position. |

I would trade Drouin, either Suzuki or Poehling, either Folin or Reilly and a 1st (2021) and 2nd (2020).
Jets choose the forward prospect they prefer, and one of 2 signed D men. I would like to see Juulsen stay, he played some real good hockey before his eye injury. I believe he’s a better 3rd pairing RD then Folin, and has a higher ceiling. Folin played well last year, so that makes him a good trade piece. And the Jets can choose between an offensive minded D (Reilly), or a stay at home guy (Folin). |

You're essentially upgrading Drouin to score 20 more goals at the cost of a 1rst, one of our better prospects, and at least 5 million in cap space. It'd be cool to have Laine on the team, but there is no way that makes us better in the long term.

I agree with this. He is a hell of a goal scorer (usually) but passed that he is sort of a one dimensional winger. For the purpose of this blog, a worst case scenario is probably a good way to go, but I thought that 10.5mil was being pretty generous. I think Aho is a steal so maybe Laine ends up with more. But that isn't to say that Laine is worth more than Aho in my opinion.

We can likely presume the ask from Laine's camp is in the $10 million range thanks to recent contracts signed by Hayes ($7.1 mill per by 7 years, 27 yrs old, 40-50 pt player), and Skinner ($9 mill by 8 years, 27 yrs old, 50-60 pt player).
Good article except for this part - which imo changes the entire point. Laine is an RFA which is far different than a sought-after UFA. He struggled mightily in the 2019 calendar year as well, and much like Monahan for our team, is fairly useless if he's not scoring. If he was to be a consistent sniper throughout this whole year then 10-10.5 is possible.
But if this trade is to happen and unless Bergevin is a real pushover, it would be egregious to give a 10M contract to a pure sniper without much of anything else. I'd say 8.5 for 6 years or 9 for 8 years would do. |

If any of you Habs fans actually think a package with Drouin as the main component will get Laine then the water in Montreal is spiked.
It starts with Domi and one of your top 4 prospects like Poehling.
Otherwise Winnipeg will just shop him elsewhere. |

Few things,
-alzner, lol, let’s get real
-jets don’t need goalie prospects, we had two goalies in the top 10 save % in the AHL last year and our starter is locked up long term
-our depth in D is not bad, Heinola, Samberg and Niku are all future regulars on Jets D.
-stop comparing Laine and Domi. Look at the history of the nhl and compare who’s scored as much as Laine at his age.
-Jets would absolutely want one of Drouin or Domi. Then Suzuki, then add another prospect or pick. Not saying you’d like that but that’s the cost. - Ross77

Being neutral on this, I think Canadiens fans are undervaluing the superstar potential that Laine brings. They have no one close to him. He was a close 2nd to Matthews in their draft year.
Discussions I believe should start with Jesperi, Poehling and a 1st ..... at minimum.

You guys don't watch too much on the west I take it. Laine plays smaller than Drouin. He doesn't hit hard much. He's a pure sniper who tries to sneak into the queit dangerous areas and plays point on the pp.
When he's targeted physically he comes off his game. Everytime I read his reported size I think, is that true?
Does his game continue to evolve. He can score, that's for sure. But he's fairly one-dimensional and thus linemate dependent. I'll bet, without looking his metrics show some of this. |

Yes, one dimensional kinda like Ovechkin who just finds an open spot, sit there and wait to get a pass.
Natural scorers are viewed differently than someone like Domi
