You don't get it yet, there are no stats for determination and desire. A pretty goal in october doesn't count in the playoffs. Superboy Dubas has been outed. I am not a fan of traps either but at this point you pretty much have to expect it in the earlier parts of the playoffs. It usually will not win a team the Stanley Cup because at some point the trap starts to break down and talent comes more to the forefront but it does allow less talented teams to be spoilers in the earlier rounds.

Teams have to be willing to adopt strategies to counter the trap. The Pens were unwilling to this year and last year (more so last year, really - this year bad defense and mediocre goaltending was equally if not more at fault).

The league can't just tell teams not to play it - that is ridiculous. They could do things like reduce the size of goalie pads as much as possible, which would increase the scoring percentage of longer shots, which would force defenses to be more aggressive and make playing a trap more difficult. I don't expect this to happen, though.
