When it comes to evaluating individual players, it can be tricky. However, looking at team play isn't as much of a crap shoot. Canada has a very deep team, even deeper than normal, and their goaltender has been outstanding. That's even considering the fact that they lost Kirby Dach before this thing even started. It's been pretty much a cakewalk from Day 1. They haven't had to face much adversity yet, and might not have to. The only advantage the US might have is that they're a little more battle tested. Spencer Knight is going to have to stand on his head. - buffalofan19
In a one game sample size goaltending and special teams could play a big role.
U.S power play has been humming.
Everything that has been done to this point doesn’t matter anymore.
The larger sample size is redundant now.

Agreed, but if Canada doesn't take penalties like they haven't been all tournament, it won't matter either.

You also can’t deny that our 34th pick has made a giant impact for his team while our 8th overall pick has been basically a non factor for his. - sbroads24
Our 8th overall pick is on likely the deepest WJC team since 2005. Germany had one really solid line this year.

Pretending Germany has the talent that Canada does is so far beyond a joke.
I'm a big JJP fan, he's got the tools. And as Saints' post already says, there's current NHL depth playing for Canada. Comparing the two is like comparing "I need to see more" Josh Allen and Sam "pre-2020 season top QB" Darnold.

And let's also talk about how World Junior performances in your draft year are always directly indicative of your NHL career.

A ton of scouts and gms put a lot of stock into the world juniors.
For example - Nico Hischier went from being a mid 1st round pick to the 1st overall pick
I get you probly have a sour taste in your mouth from mitts going from world juniors mvp to what he is now
But a good performance at the world juniors is a good sign of things to come. It’s the best of the best in the world for their age group. Can’t get any better test against your own peers |

And that's where it gets tricky. It's far from worthless when it comes to a measuring stick, but a great tournament is not a sure fire indicator of NHL success, nor is a poor tournament an automatic death blow to your career. Team makeup is a bigger indicator of success, especially with the power houses at the top.

I mean .... you can never truly predict if an nhl prospect at the age of 18 is going to be good or bad.
Eichel Mcdavid and Dahlin. Fine.
But once you get outside the top 3 or top 5 some drafts. It’s a Turkey shoot and random who progresses.
It happens every draft. |

I’m not sure if sucks is the best word to describe Quinn.
He’s got NHL ready and that’s fine. He needs some AHL time realistically.
But thats okay
Team Canada might have its best roster ever assembled in this years world juniors.
In 10 years we might look back and be shocked that much talent was together at one time |

I do not think sucks is a qualifying word. Kind of like pregnant, you are or you are not.
Anyhoo, I cut the cord so I am wondering, does anyone have a streaming location for the World Gold Game tonight? |

It means little in the end. I can rattle off 20 players who crushed the world juniors, and half of them are nobodies.
I can name 20 more players who were pedestrian, and half of them are stars.
It's fair to put stock into the juniors. I'm as excited as anyone that JJ and Dylan killed it. I'm also saying, it doesn't mean Richard until they do it in the NHL.
Cody Hodgson and Jordan Eberle. Two of the game's elite of the elite. |

I love RJ's progress. I don't have much to say about him at this point, but if he keeps going, kid's going to be a steady 200' top 4. And for BASICALLY an early 2nd round pick, that's pretty fair.
