Ya, Sabres Cap/roster is a mess. Right now they are getting away with it because the have Dahlin and Joker on ELC's and 2 Goalies at less than $6m.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

That all changes dramatically next season.

But for now, IF they optimized their roster in the F ranks, it would look something like

L1 - Skinner-Eichel-Sam = $23.2m
L2 - Hall- Staal-Olofsson = $14.3m
L3 - Mitts-Cozens-Sheahan =$2.5
L4 - Reider-Eakin-Lazar = $3.75 (+$4.9m = $8.65 ; for Okposso after Taxi/Amerks)

He is in the best place for us with the Kracken, Skinner's deal starts becoming a lot easier to move next year.

I don't understand the logic the Sabres employ, IF what 89 says about the Team wanting to trade Skinner...and I don't have reason to doubt what he posted.

Normally, teams would try to showcase the asset to build value. In such a scenario, one might expect for the HC to be directed to reconnect Skinner with Eichel and Sam in the hope of re-igniting his productivity.

-ATOI is down 25.5% from ~ 18:30 to 13:50.
-High Danger Chances For is down about 6.5%

As a result, his ixG this season is 2.65 G's...so his actual production is off by that many goals this season so far. He needs to puck if up for sure...that isn't the argument, rather it's the how to get him there.

FYI, during his 40 G season, his actual goals out produced his ixG by some 13.n due to a historically high shooting percentage...probably from better feeds from Eichel..i.e better high- danger chances...like Steve Valiquette poi ts out, not all HDC's are created equal either.
