i thought it meant that those are the number of games they'll need to play in to reach a level that would mandate a protection decision

Third year pro = eligible.

That's the easy part. Point is, Borgen would have to be protected.

“All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices are exempt from the draft. They do not count toward a team's protected list.”

Is Borgen an “nhl” player?!?

Yes. It's really pro years. You don't need NHL games.

"All players who have accrued two or less professional seasons at the end of the 2020-21 season, as well as all unsigned draft choices appearing on the teams reserve list, will be exempt from the upcoming expansion draft."

I got it for a second.... then I got confused...

A player is considered exempt from the expansion draft if they have accrued two or fewer pro (NHL or AHL) seasons. This can become extremely convoluted thanks to the many details of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Any rules that I explain here can be found at CapFriendly.com, which also has a neat little Expansion Draft Simulator. In case you’re unfamiliar with the entry-level slide rule, it comes into effect if a team has a player under contract during his D+1 or D+2 seasons, that is, their first two seasons after their draft year. When a player reaches ten NHL games in a season, the first year of the contract is officially entered, so a team will typically decide whether or not to delay the contract and send them back down to the AHL, CHL, SHL or what have you, after nine games. Notably, if a player spends their D+1 or D+2 season in the AHL, that does not count as their first pro season. Erik Brannstrom, if you’ll recall, his D+2 season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. Thus he’s exempt from the draft, even though he’s already played two seasons in the minors.

It would make some sense to lower the games on the exposure requirements, but honestly, I don't think teams struggle very much with that.

He's a RFA, so he is Sabres property, but is considered unsigned. The wording is confusing.

I’d go the 8 skaters route. Protect Eichel, Reinhart, VO, Skinner, Dahlin, Risto, Joki, and Borgen.

Expose: Mitts, Tage, Eakin (please god) Girgs (also please god) KO (ok this one for sure god) asplund Miller (rest trash or sitting as a 21 UFA currently

Don't they have to protect Okposo, due to NTC?

Being signed or not is irrelevant. The Knights picked Engelland, who was UFA, from the Flames.

You think skinner makes it to the expansion draft?

I Have my doubts he makes it there after the last two games. No clue how they move him.

And it’ll be curious to see if they try and sell any pieces off... gain an asset or two instead of leaving someone exposed.

Right, and he didn’t have to sign there. I think it’s just they got the period before the new league year to convince him into it

Those are 'slide' years. Gets a little tricky, but doesn't apply to Borgen because he's above age.

Wish we got to see more than 4 games of Borgen before making that decision. It's a tough call.

Nylander's deal slide twice. In all likelihood, Quinn's will this year. Most of the time, picks don't/can't play in the AHL their first 2 years after the draft. If they handled Mitts differently, he could have been in that boat.

Sure but who in that forward grouping really needs protecting? Mitts, Asplund? I think most would be happy if that’s who we lost in all of this

I guess the silver lining is mitts hasn’t shown enough to be worried about.

If mitts or tage have any value or need to be packaged to make a trade, I’m not hesitating. I’d like to get something as opposed to gone in expansion. But I won’t shed a tear if it happens.

I like Asplund more than mitts right now. Lol.

That could also be an issue if you start making trades. You might end up with guys you wanna keep! Lol.
