I think what the fire Benning crowd wanted was stop making things worse.
- overpay for intangibles
- trade for Miller
- trade for Toffoli
- let UFA’s walk for nothing
- trade for Schmidt
- sign Holtby (and buy him out)
- trade for OEL/Garland

Basically, if Benning had just not done the thing he thought he should do they would be in a way better place. Allow those earlier ugly contracts to expire on their own, sign shorter term guys to hold the fort while you stockpile draft picks and prospects and invest in their development. Every time he made a mistake he made another one trying to correct it.

I could see Horvat getting a 1st, a solid prospect and potentially a 2024 1st if he keeps playing the way he is. Sure he's a rental, but any serious team would rather pay more for a PPG center who is tops of the league on face offs than save on a 3rd liner.

There is always a few good/decent 2nd rounders. Canucks haven't picked many of them though

They took the chance, picked a few, traded away a few and lost them all pretty much.

Get a better GM Professional and amateur scouting staff as well.

Welll if it’s any consolation, Rasmus Anderson was picked with Vancouvers 2nd rounder. Maybe Benning and his scouts weren’t the draft gurus Nucker claimed them to be.

I think most people have just realized that this core isn't good enough to be a contender. Blame the coaches, role players, etc, but it won't matter.
