Cruising through naturalstattrick to see how the Canadiens did last night vs the Red Wings.

Neither team 5v5 have a shot from the goal crease. According to the heat map.

Van had 9 high danger chances for against the Sens. Mtl had 4, Det 5.
Van's expected goals 5v5 last night was 2.01. Mtl 1.22 and Det 1.58

Van played pretty damn bad last night

Mtl vs Det was one of the best defensive games or the worst offensive games in probably a long time.

Dated but holds up. A classic.

Finding money for Horvat and Kuzmenko is not an issue. I would be willing to bet anyone that OEL will be bought out next year and a 4 mil cap increase will leave plenty of room. The real story is do you want to spend that much?

Bo, who is in his 2nd year of his prime, with another 3 or 4 years remaining in his prime, is on pace for a 100 point season, with 75 goals.
He has scored 43 goals in the past 82 games, has been at the top of the league on faceoffs, for a few years, is always around 20 minutes per night, plays against top players etc.
He will be getting 8 million per.
Kuzmenko currently is producing points, but is a bit of a nightmare defensively, but could be in the 4.5-6.65 million range.
That is a lot of money tied up in the forwards, without addressing the defense.
Also, if they were to buyout OEL, he still needs to be replaced and that will also come at a cost, unless Stillman magically turns things around.

If you like seeing pond hockey, that was entertaining, if you like seeing a game with teams playing with structure, well not so much.

No one will ever top Keenan. Ever. People's clouded judgement over Benning just influence their anger. Although I knew what to expect from Rutherford longer term I will admit some of the hirings have been questionable. Like Benning, Allvin is an excellent SCOUT but may be a poor GM. Time will tell.

Can Studnicka make it? Still fairly young.

Something has to give. The talent is there. And what’s weird is when you watch them, there are spells where they just can dominate a team.

But the balance is clearly off, and they are not gettng big plays on either end of the ice at the key moments in a game.

Last year was the same, they would dominate but scored timely goals. Last season 5v5 shooting percentage was 9.2 vs 7.9 league average. This season so far blues shooting 5.2%. Goaltending is not be as good either for them.

Listening to the scouts who had Lekkerimaki at 7 doesn't make him an excellent scout.

It's real early but Lekkerimaki looking like he fell for a reason. A lot of other players are doing much better than he is. Wingers that aren't small and soft. Centers. Defenders.
