Yzerman took over Detroit in April of 2019, they’re already better than the Canucks who’ve been re-tooling since 2014.

His first draft what does he do, he takes a 6’4” right shot dman at #6 overall, who won the Calder Trophy, his second pick 35th overall in the second round he another takes 6’5” right shot dman. Something tells me that man knows a thing or two about how to build a hockey team.

They also do not rush any of their prospects, they play when they’re ready…so it seems.

This Calder winning Dman, most people in here thought he was a late round pick and were selecting every other forward over him. Even insiders had him ranked at 17.

Dmitri Simashev, LHD, Yaroslavl

A mobile, smooth-skating defenceman, Simashev is among the best defenders in this class; he shuts down plays before they start; he reads and anticipates play very well, he’ll step up in the neutral zone with perfect timing to prevent entries without taking himself out of the play. He’s big, and uses his size effectively; he protects the puck really well, extending his long reach and using his free arm to shield off pressure. He’s not the most physical yet, but I think that’ll come with time and maturity; he doesn’t really need to be super physical right now, but he’s certainly capable. If he’s got the puck, good luck getting it away from him, he controls the puck exceptionally well, and adapts to pressure instantly, weaving through defences in transition and making it look easy. He’s a breakout wizard, great at escaping pressure with the puck, recovering it along the boards and combining his skating and puck protection to evade incoming pressure; he sniffs out contested pucks and turns them into offensive rushes in an instant. The points haven’t really come yet for Simashev, but he does so much that won’t show up on the scoresheet, everything he does makes life a lot easier for his teammates; whether he’s getting points or not, he’s making good things happen for his team in all three zones. Yeah, I remember him being ranked in the teens by everyone. Canucks were picking at 10 and people were saying that was too early to go with Seider.

17. Everyone was saying bad choice at 10 trade down. That was the year there were a lot of forwards from the US that posters and scouts had way ahead of this virtually unknown. Even Borberg was ranked at 10 ahead of him.

Wow. Everyone is getting up there in age unless you are Keith Richards who looks like sh1t but keeps on going and going. Sympathy for the Devil and snorting Dad has given him eternal life.

This year I did not follow the draft at all. I have found other ways to be disappointed instead.

I still have faith in Podz. He may have been sent down, but the kid is 21. Lets see when he is 24 or a year later.

I am fine with that. Not a big fan of BPA, as most of those lists are made by analytics people who love small, soft flashy wingers..

Just for conversation purposes, you know the Coyotes franchise has had 11 picks in the top three rounds of the past two NHL drafts. You have to go all the way back six NHL drafts 2017-2022 to count that many picks in the top three rounds for the Canucks. The more you look at the draft the more you realize how bad the Canucks organization is at utilizing the draft.

2024 the Coyotes have THREE 2nd round picks and FOUR 3rd round picks, man they'd better hit on some of these picks for that brand spankin new arena in Tempe!

There's still plenty of time for him to develop. He has raw skill and a tremendous work ethic. He probably wasn't ever worthy of being picked 10th overall in the entire world, but hey, he'll be the next Curtis Lazar and have a decent career.
