#Canucks close to signing Rick Tocchet according to
@reporterchris
, and he'll "probably arrive in Vancouver with a couple additions to his coaching staff as well."

Yeah he has sucked. Same as the rest of the scraps Van has picked up from Boston over the years.
- manvanfan

Luckily his entire salary can be buried if needed.

I'm surprised he lived this long, but yeah, RIP. Got a few CSNY I'll be spinning over the next couple of days.

Good hockey man. Better drafter than Hans Moleman and his chipmunks
- Nucker101

The notion the Jim Benning was a drafting guru is laughable, he was average at best. Not to mention he completely whiffed on a 5th and 6th overall picks, which had a huge negative effect on the franchise. Add to that, he had to be forced to draft Elias Pettersson by the scouting department...it's just an old wives tale he was a drafting genius.

You know, I just looked, the Mike Gillis era produced 923 NHL games played from the second round and beyond in six NHL drafts, 2008 to 2013. Jim Benning produced 1038 NHL games by players he drafted second round and beyond in eight drafts, 2014 to 2021. That'll probably increase if Klimovich can make the jump to the show.

Furthermore, when Benning was let go who really changed in the amateur scouting department? They added Cammi Granato but who really changed in the amateur scouting department? It's the same people. Outside of first round picks it's generally the scouting department during meetings who makes up the draft list. Not the GM.

Benning had a huge issue of tunnel vision when it came to drafting. One good showing and a kid become the only one he would draft...

So you realize that Hutton is the only one left from Gillis but Demko, Forsling, Lockwood, Gadjovich, Hoglander are adding to a total that has already eclipsed Gillis and there are many that are close and many that as you said may play still like Klimovich.

He's good at having players fall into his lap but how much of his genius should be associated to Judd Brackett?

Farhan on Tocchet:

I'll be honest with you, right now you what they're looking for as much as anything else? Somebody that can keep JT Miller in line and hold him accountable...You need somebody who can hold Miller accountable in that locker-room and I think that's priority #1

Not getting a coach, just a babysitter.

The best way to keep Miller in-line is to send him to another team, there you don't need a babysitter.

Of course, I laid that out in my post. Gillis started drafting in 2008, fifteen years ago, it’s an extremely low bar to beat. You’re saying Benning is a genius because he outdrafted one of the worst drafting GM’s in the teams history?

Benning’s first six drafts, if you wanna go apples to apples, is very average when you look around the league. But you’re correct in that those numbers will increase with Demko and the other guys you mentioned.

The scouting department is largely the same now as it’s been for years, despite the top people changing out. I think Brackett was named director of amateur scouting for the Wild in July of 2020. It’ll be interesting to see how his drafting pans out.

Rutherford and Allvin clearly believe they have something special in Pettersson and Hughes, thus the notion they want to build with castoffs and hope to get lucky…isn’t that exactly what Linden and Benning did before Linden realized that ain’t gonna work? The organization just keeps spinning in circles.

In four drafts for the Flyers as their GM, 2014-2017, Ron Hextall produced 1027 NHL games second round and beyond so far, and that number is only going to increase as well. And people say he was a poopty drafter. That’s better than Jim Benning or very similar.

Give me Benning drafting over Hans Moleman and the chipmunks all day

The Benning + Brackett duo was decent. They hit on some nice picks outside of the top 10, keeping those players was a different story

Unpopular opinion among most but I would rather have Miller over Horvat now and in the future.
