Well, Jim Rutherford said he's realized this team needs "major surgery" and he might have to move a core piece. Quinn Hughes makes perfect sense in that the Canucks defense is tragic and he would probably help bring the biggest return of young dmen and most likely a first round pick along with them. Just guessing on my part.

Playoffs are still attainable, if they play at a Boston Bruins 84%points percentage pace.
That would get the Canucks to 103 points, easily enough to make the playoffs.

Core piece = Bo and Boeser. I'm not saying he wouldn't trade Hughes, it would just have to be a MASSIVE return (players). Not some late 1st round picks.

Also, the Canucks D is tragic, so no point in getting rid of the best/youngest defenseman.

We had a real Sophie’s choice with this theme when it came to the league’s most catastrophic franchise. There was no shortage of options in Vancouver from Thatcher Demko turning into a pumpkin to the overpaid shell of a defense corps in front of him. JT Miller’s descent into a nearly untradeable asset mere months after signing a lengthy extension is right near the top of the list, too.

But right now, it’s hard to think of anything worse than Jim Rutherford leaving poor loveable Bruce Boudreau twisting in the wind. “No, honey, I’m not breaking up with you! I’m just telling all my friends you’re not the one for me, that you’re a terrible partner, and DM-ing a bunch of single people I know who might be interested just to see what else is out there. But I’m absolutely not breaking up with you… right now.” Just spare the man his dignity and let him go.
