Most of these guys just move on to the next thing they are asked to comment on. They just do nto care. I do not really see anyone sit and gloat, etc... for the camera.

I am sure there are many that pound their chest on podcasts and their websites and the like, but I do not think I ever saw Button do that, at least, overtly.

are there certain guys on TV or the internet who are known for being really good at predicting where guys will get picked?

Like a team making a pick, it is a crapshoot.

You never really know what a team is thinking, unless there is a clear #1 pick. And even then, most teams hold that info too close to the vest.

So it is guess work based on perceived player rankings.

Look at the Slaf pick, how many people were surprised by that? Not many folks had the Habs taking him 1st overall.

yeah, would be interesting to know who has the best track record in terms of predicting how these kids panned out and became successful at the NHL level, to me it seems to be a lot of guesswork.

i suppose i do trust the actual team employees more than the guys pounding their chests from behind a camera or a keyboard with their silly lists.

my impression though is that there isn't one guy who is undoubtedly above all the rest, it's probably a mish-mash (lol) of one scout having a "good" year, then it's another, etc.

yeah, football is the same way. i guess it just goes to show nobody really knows except people who work for the teams.

A lot of these guys depend on scouting reports, maybe see the player in a game or two (like WJC or U18s or something like that). Not many of them are full time scouting prospects as a job, so it is a guess based on another analyst(s)/Scout(s) guess and maybe some cool youtube videos.

Like, Bobby Mac does not rank players, he gets a number of scouts to rank and then he tabulates the results.

I think it gets a little easier based on team size...

Like NFL rosters are pretty large, compared to NHL rosters compared to NBA rosters. I think making a guess at what teams will pick is a little easier for some leagues.

NFL must be a nightmare. But then again, a lot of those players are on TV each weekend, so...

and even then lol... I think people sometimes underestimate how basically impossible it is to predict how an 18-year-old will respond to the talent level, the pressure and the money that comes with becoming an NHL player.

I think the best organizations in terms of recruiting are those that are best at developing young talent and helping them become the best player they can be.

I said "best" a lot but you get the point loll

while it doesn't sound like a horrible strategy, I'd be curious to know how that was successful compared to other lists

he does not match players to teams, straight ranking.

If 1 team picks based on need, that might throw the whole thing off... but if memory server me right, usually most of his top 10 go int he top 10... there are 1 or 2 exceptions, but not too many wrong.

Whether they go where he ranked them is another thing.

But I am fundamentally too lazy to go look at his lists to compare to actual draft.

I would tend to think this sort of thing has already been compiled, but maybe it hasn't either, I dunno.
