Well, if you want a forward, this is the year to get one with a later pick.
- Mashadar

it could also be an opportunity to grab an even more solid dman, and trade one or two others to get a highly skilled forward. sounds like there's some room for creativity this year.

Might not be easy but trading our 2nd first round pick (26th?) and some other asset(s) for a top 15 pick would be great.

I expect major moves will also be made next summer (or during the season) ... Dvorak (4.45 mil), Savard (3.5 mil), Armia (3.4 mil), Evans (1.7 mil), Pezzetta (812k) and Kovacevic (766k) will become UFA's. We also have 2 first round and 2 second round picks as well next year.

That's more cap room and we already have collected a ton of assets to make trades ... should be interesting to see how HuGo want to shape this team.

Petry and Allen come off the books too (about $4.3M), plus there might be a cheaper option than Evans (but I like the guy as a #4C).

Next summer is when I expect big things to happen.

This summer is still set up time.

personally I'd want to keep Savard and/or Matheson, as much as the habs have upcoming talent on the backend they're still all very young, and these guys are perfect to help support that youth and transition to a progressively bigger role.

Good point, forgot about the dead cap guys.
I like Evans too but his concussion history worries me a bit ... who knows, Owen Beck might be a nice replacement in that role.

while I agree with this I wouldn't be surprised if they did pull off some very significant moves, there's no point in waiting if there's a good deal to be made.

but yeah I don't believe in bullpoop trades like acquiring Steven Stamkos, that kind of deal wouldn't be at the right time for this rebuild.

As much as I like Savard and his valuable play (shot blocking) in our zone, I'd much rather keep Matheson as a veteran ... the guy can skate like the wind.

On the other hand, Matheson could also be an attractive trade asset ... mon coeur balance.

If the guy they want is there, and they can get him, they got to do that.

But I suspect they are going to wait.

sure but Savard is also playing some big minutes and is an important part of the leadership group, he obviously doesn't have the same skating abilities that Matheson has but he does bring an element of physicality in front of the net. they're just very different players.

Those kids on defense are not going to be kids for much longer, so need to stop thinking of them as kids.... 3-4+ years of NHL experience.

but they don't have 3 or 4 years of NHL experience yet, and in terms of becoming a top NHL defenseman, they are still "kids"... call them "young adults" if you prefer but they're still green.

by the end of the year, they will all have at least 3 years in the NHL (not talking about the guys who have not come up yet).

You have to pass the torch at some point.

Evans is the type of player that you sign for 2 years, if he gets concussions he's LTIR and it's solved.

I agree, I'm just saying that it isn't all that common for a 23-year-old to be regularly playing top-pairing minutes at the NHL level, it is what it is.

Yeah, he is not a 8 year max guy.

I like the guy, but...

Can't think of a better time to learn trial by fire when you are not expected to win, then down the road when they are expected to win. Need to see if they can handle the pressure.

Habs are probably not a playoff team in 24/25, but I think it might be a drastically different story in 25/26.

yeah, it's definitively bullpoop ... at his age, why would Stamkos want to come to a team in reconstruction. He's not even close to be in the age range the Habs need, by the time we're contenders again he'd be ready to retire.

Radio hosts/YouTubers need to talk about something during the summer months ... so anyone that might be available (ie. Zegras, Necar, etc) becomes a subject of conversation. Big names attract listeners/viewers/fefans, I'm sure the Habs management are laughing their head off at these made up rumors.

They always fail to consider at what stage of reconstruction the team is.

yeah, "trial by fire" isn't necessarily the most ideal way to go in terms of team building and player development, bygones I guess.

Let us see who is laughing after the Habs trade for Necas and Zegras, then sign Stamkos and win the cup in 2025!!!!!

that often happens for sure.

age-wise Zegra and Necas would fit the bill, but it's the flaws to their game and the cost to acquire them that also need to be considered.

Like I said, it is different if you think you are a playoff/cup contender or if you are trying to build a team to make the playoffs in a few years.

That is my take anyways.

Habs gonna do what the Habs gonna do.
