I don't know the full details of the Gauthier situation either but a red line has to be drawn in the sand.

Those are the rules to play in the NHL ... before you become a UFA, teams own your ass and you do as you're told because you're just an employee (very well paid too). If you don't like that then you can (frank) off to go play elsewhere (ie. KHL).

When you get hired for a job in the real world, you don't immediately ask to get the executive suite on the top floor, you need to earn what you get.

- Garfield512

yeah well that's what I'm saying, knowing those details to get the full picture might make you want to change your approach and adapt accordingly, there's always more than just one side to a story.

and even if the player does respect the rules and agrees to play for whatever team that drafted him, that player can still very well be an entitled prima donna and/or a bust, there's bound to be more Kotkaniemis and Yakupovs in the future lol.

its not a regular job, few people in the world have their talent
- deadpoulet

yeah, which is why teams are sometimes willing to make a few compromises when they see a kid with a poop ton of talent. not everyone is already totally mature and responsible at 18 years old, there's a learning curve both on and off the ice to consider for sure.

I suspect player's agents have a lot to do with some of these cases, it's all about the money (ie. big market sponsorship deals, etc) a player (and agent) can make.

GMs need to collectively put their foot down for the benefit of their respective market or they might see their ticket revenues go down.

Kinda reminds me when the Expos became a de facto development team for the Yankees and Red Sox's of the world ... when Montreal fans realized this, the attendance fell drastically and the team folded.

Why support a team that has no chance of ever winning?

well for the most part when it comes to drafting players I think the rules are being respected, teams/GMs probably don't really need to push for stricter rules or anything.

to make things more even between markets I'd rather see the league focus on other aspects, like implementing financial mechanisms that would nullify any advantages concerning income taxes for example.

well I guess it would be the same kind of idea as the wealth distribution currently going on, bigger markets compensating for the existence of smaller ones. it's probably impossible to even things out perfectly but there might be ways to at least alleviate the issue.

I don't really know ... how about if a team's Salary Cap would be adjusted according to the state/province tax level a team is in?

The tax thing is really complex. For example, when Matthews signed his contract a few years ago, a lot of it was bonus money. Why is that important? Well if you're an Arizona resident, like Matthews, you can use their tax code to your advantage because state tax law says that any salaries received as a bonus, etc... are taxed at a lower rate in the state. So, July 1st, he is living in Arizona the signing bonus comes in and voila! Tax savings

I would find it funny if they implemented a system to correct the tax differences for teams with the cap, and someone how the Rangers still screw up the 54% extra they're given

yeah, not sure if it's true for any player in any market but I've heard there are often different ways to steer more money in the player's pockets, and have less revenue lost through taxation.

And tax law in the states is so much more favourable for the rich in terms of "hiding" money.

"How do teams in Florida, Texas and Arizona sign players for cheaper?"

Well let's look at $8.5M playing for the Lightning and $8.5M for the Canadiens.

For instance. Nikita Kucherov just signed an extension worth $9.5 million, and if you compare that to John Tavares $11 million/year contract it looks like Kucherov took less. But if you look at his net salary it is virtually the same as Tavares in Toronto.
Tavares makes $11 million in Toronto and his net salary is $5.145 million, while Kucherov’s $9.5 million salary in Tampa Bay nets him $5.781 million. Kucherov still has a higher net salary playing in Tampa Bay, even though Tavares gets paid $1.5 million more in Toronto.
