It actually looks (sorta) ok/nice outside.

Maybe I can salvage something out of this rain filled long weekend and get some bike riding in....

as long as it's the canadian ones, that sad excuse of a candy they call "smarties" in 'Murica are really pathetic.

While i lived in the States, my ex was addicted to those (frank)ing things! They're called "Rockets" in Canada.

Also, I have 10 of my electrics up on 1 wall. Another 4 to go up on the other wall and the 7-string without a headstock on a nice new guitar stand on the floor. And i have my 2 new amp heads set up and my 2 EVH 2x12 cabs on floor angled up (they're boutique so they come with that feature) and they white!!

I'll send pics when its all done.

ooh, also. i have a question that you might be able to answer.

i was reading an article on nate mendel and he mentioned that while he understands how powerful that 5th string would be, playing a 5 string bass would be some kind of line he wasn't crossing or something.

why do some bass players feel like that? is it just a punk sensibility thing? like, "we couldn't even afford a 5th string when we started out!"

are some guitar players the same way? like, they only want the 6 strings?

Well, I believe that some musicians are "purists" and like to keep traditions within their genres. Kind of like when people freaked out when Bob Dylan switched to the electric guitar at Folk Festivals. And some guys love to push the envelope and expand upon their given genres.

Some musicians stick with what is physically comfortable for them as well. Adding an extra string on ANY instrument will drastically change the neck radius, neck profile, tone, fingering (hee hee), and ergonomics.

Some musicians are chasing a specific tone in their head and the extra string might help them find it, or conversely, take them farther away from their sonic destination.

And some musicians feel it necessary to slander or poo-poo the idea of change or adding a string - only because they can't successfully migrate to a similar instrument but with more strings.

So really, and most obviously, it's a personal choice. Depending on your purist intent, physical comfort, attitude, willingness to play outside of the box, and chase whatever internal tone/color that your hearing.

I hope that kind of helps a little and isn't confusing.

i guess i get it.

i notice a lot of real shredding metal guitars look like they're the ones offered with the extra strings. is it better for real intricate music compared to straight ahead ac/dc banging-it-out rock and roll?

the necco wafers are larger, thinner versions of smarties but stale and with 10% of the taste.

Actually, (don't post that AKKCHUULLY Meme, Pat!! Lol) the first 7 string was invented by Canadian Jazz Legend Lenny Breau and he was influenced by Chet Atkins. Then players like Steve Vai gravitated to it in the early nineties as did Korn. Korn basically played barre chords on a 7 string and only used it to reach a lower tunings while maintaining proper string tension, intonation etc.

Now, it's a total mixed bag. You'll find 7 and 8-string guitars in a lot of different genres.....but mainly metal for lower tuning purposes. It's basically a regular guitar but in a baritone register now due to longer scale lengths and whatnot.

You can definitely rock out to simple poop on them, or given the expanded harmonic range, you can really do some interesting things.

It's a real mind (frank) too when you first start playing a guitar with extra strings. It takes a while for your hands and mind to wrap itself around the concept because your hands are used to going to certain strings - not realizing that all of your regular strings have shifted down 1 spot on the fretboard.

Basically, you can use them for whatever you'd like, there are no rules. But more strings can add options, or the transition will (frank) you up. Some people just can't play 7 string guitars or 5-6 string basses after playing 6 string guitars and 4 string basses.

You can also “down-tune” regular instruments as long as they’re set up properly. You couldn’t play a song like Limo Wreck by just taking your standard tuned guitar and just simply loosening the strings. They’d be falling off the neck.

But bands like that were trying to be the opposite of what was metal and hair metal at the time. Grunge was for players to be unpolished, no real soloing, very few harmonies. It was stripped down and giving the finger to the norm.

And they were a six-string rock/grunge band. Probably a comfort thing, and seeing as they came up during the late 80’s……there weren’t many bangs using 7 strings. Was probably at the “this will never take off” phase.
