Not sure if this has been discussed here, but I just took a look at the 24-25 schedule. The first 4 games are 10:00 starts on the road! Could there be a worse way to start the season for fans? - Dkos
For the team though, that's probably the best in terms of bonding and having no distractions.

The issue is that he sees a player like Poehling as being more effective than a player like Frost due to his bias for certain kinds of players. He's wrong. The best teams want skill, talent and speed backed up by a good team mix with a sprinkling role players. Tortorella wants the opposite. He wants a team full of checkers and grinders with just enough offense sprinkled in. - MJL
Good teams worry about the top of the roster first, the Flyers worry about the bottom of the roster.

Even worse, Tortorella elevates bottom of the roster players over more skilled and talented players.

From the outside, looking in, Torts did a heck of a job with that roster last year, and the loss of your goalie. I’m not a flyers follower. I wouldn’t pick apart torts… he nearly got you in that playoffs with a limited roster. I think it’s a heck of a job. And you get his post game interviews. I think the flyers will upset a lot of better teams in the upcoming season. |

It does seem like that….maybe because they have such few guys that are top of the roster… |

When he decides to show up and isn't dodging accountability ...
But yea it's usually worth listening to whether to praise him or bury him. - Flyers_01
I personally don't give a sh!t about any of this. The sky was falling on to all of our heads when Torts chose to scratch Couturier, the new captain, and so many were upset when he didn't give a reason. Well the reason was obvious.
Than there are others within the organization who don't give reasons for things and suddenly, that's there right. Cutter Gauthier doesn't give a reason as to why he wants to be traded and that's his right. Flyers hear Ryan Johansson is a jerk, so based on what they've heard it is their right to send him down but I've never heard a story as to what makes him a jerk, and it's the Flyers right not to give Johansson an explanation. Now they're surprised as to why the jerk is responding to his accusations of being called a jerk.
It’s just amazing who gets a pass and who doesn’t. |

Tortorella is renowned for falling in love with players. The wrong kind of players. He's a used car salesman.

Let's go down the incestuous rabbit hole a little bit.
Sullivan picks his mentor to assist him on Team USA with the understanding that Sullivan is likely to get fired after this year with Torts getting promoted and giving Sullivan his job on the Flyers. The circle of life.
Bill has previously pointed out that it's who you know, not what you know when staying employed in the NHL and has indeed posited this scenario for next year. - Flyers_01
That is partly true however they dont just just hire people because they know them, they also have the ability to do the job. This also applies everywhere. People get jobs because of who they know, it gives them an edge over other candidates, however it isnt like my Mom for example will get me a job at her bank as a teller when I have no knowledge in the field. If I had a financial background then of course she would get me that job.

based on what? Sharp leclair Stewart are 3 recent examples.
What have they done in the past to show they have the ability to do whatever it is they were hired to do? what is their resume? |

He hasnt fallen in love with anyone. He simply plays people who deserve it in his mind. If Fost is not playing at his best, it doesnt matter how skilled you are, he will demote you. We saw it with Coots as well. He was of course hurt as well but I can guarantee you Coots will be back as the #1C this season as long as he plays at the level expected of him.
I have no issue with this as it demands your young players to put the work in and not take their position in the lineup for granted. Something someone like Dubois does. Poehling wasnt the #1 C because Torts loves him, it was because everyone else was just that bad. Guys like Coots, Frost and Even laughton are held to higher standards, as they should be. The better players should be better than your 4th line guy and that simply was not the case down the stretch.

It's the same thing. The problem is the data and what's in his mind, are often at odds. He has favorites and he overlooks things with some players and not others. No coach is consistent in that regard but Tortorella takes it to an extreme.

The available evidence contradicts your opinion. It's exactly why Poehling was played as the 1C. He is the kind of player that he favors. It was a ridiculous coaching decision and had a big part in why they lost the game. It is exhibit A of the issue with Tortorella and why he is an awful coach for developing young players. |
