there were no other suitors for his services. - hello it's me 2050
For reference. His last job with the CBJ paid him 2.5 mill/yr, his high point before the Flyers hired him. He then missed the playoffs followed by being unemployed for a year before the Flyers almost doubled his salary.
I would love to hear how that conversation went. |

Perhaps his conditions were he wants a front office job like Columbus but instead they said we will give you more money to just coach. Spit balling here. |

The Flyers were desperate and their desperation showed. They needed someone they could sell the fans, it didn't really matter who but that person still had to say yes.
It's not like they had a Bedard or McDavid to make the face of the franchise. 2 years later they are still selling Torts, followed by Michkov, followed by ND. |

So looking to next year. I see these teams as maybe the only team worse then the Flyers.
Columbus
San Jose
Anaheim
Maybe Calgary
It is imperative for Philly to to be in that top 5 i believe.
I would even add top 5 this draft and 2026.

Not a chance the Flyers are in the bottom five the next two years voluntarily. Maybe they will get some lottery magic.

That's pretty amazing. Even the Torts groupies know he is on his deathbed coaching wise. |

That right there shows that he falls in love with certain types of players. Scott Laughton may look like he is great in Torts's mind, but by every metric and eye test he is one of the worst players in the NHL. Ya, he is great in the locker room. I guess he needs to be because he is a black hole on the ice where it should count.
Your Poehling opinion is objectively wrong. Poehling was getting caved in on the ice compared to all the other players you mentioned. He was out there because Torts fell in love with his style even if it is an abject failure on the ice. The stats tell me Torts has no idea what he is watching. He has blinders on for a certain type of attitude. Objective results be damned. - MBFlyerfan
Poehling was playing at a level that Poehling was supposed to be playing at. Torts didnt place him there because he is better. He placed him there to send a message to Couturier and Frost. Of course he was getting caved in, hes playing above his skill level. Coots and Frost were not playing at theirs. They arent just going to snap out of it by just leaving them where they were. Frankly Couturier should have had the balls to just sit out and heal since he was injured.
Playing down the lineup is also a good way for players to get their confidence back. Playing against weaker talent helps build confidence. That is also why many teams will send young players down to the minors. Coots was hurt and was playing awful. He shouldnt have been in the lineup at all IMO. He clearly couldnt play through that injury.
Frost is running out of time to show he belongs in the NHL. If he fails to show any promise this season, the Flyers could choose to move on from him. People here love him but people here also loved Jordan Weal, Wade Allison and Jason Akeson

You are underestimating them.
Carolina took a step back
Washington didnt improve IMO. Every team Chychrun has been on has been a mess and hes alway held a top position on those teams. I dont think Dubois will help them either. Theres a reason LA dumped him after just 1 year. Thirs team to give up on him. Ovi is also 39 years old this season.
Detroit did not improve
Isles are Average, didnt improve. Only improvement they can see is from Sorokin not being bad again
Not sure Buffalo got better. Could go either way Skinner was still a big scorer for them. A lot rides on guys like Quinn, Peterka and Benson
PIT sucks, only going down from last year
Who knows what will happen with Ottawa. D and G looks improved but weak on forward with Giroux and Perron leading your 2nd line in their late 30s.
Flyers will have every chance to make the playoffs this year sd they are. Young players possibly taking more steps further, Michkov potentially being a good NHL player off the bat, hes a fav for the calder right now.
As long as Ersson and Fedotov hold up they will be in a good spot to make the playoffs. Even if Drysdale cant stay healthy which I think he can do. |

What's true is that both Frost and Couturier, despite the latter player struggling due to coming off of a major injury and being overused. We're both getting better results than Poehling was. You're wrong that he wasn't placing him there because he was better. He was, in Tortorella's eyes. Are you seriously going to tell me that in a must win game against Washington, he benched Frost to send a message? Of course not. Your statement that Couturier should have had the balls to just sit out, is asinine. Couturier is a competitor and has been his entire career. He is not going to bail on the team if he feels he can help the team

Frost has already shown plenty of promise and shown that he belongs in the NHL. What are you talking about? What he needs is a coach that is going to put in the lineup, in the right situations with the right players and leave him alone to play. See what happens.
Here is the reality with Tortorella. Good at getting buy in, defensive hockey and giving a team structure. Really bad at player development and in game management. Some people such as yourself apparently need to get hit in the head to realize that Tortorella is an archaic coach, well past his prime. Extremely overrated and a very mediocre at best coach. Then add in his personality defects. He is the equivalent at this point and time, an overpaid interim coach. The sooner they get rid of him, the better. |

Making the playoffs would be a disaster for the Flyers. You're a typical Flyers fan. Nobody else improved but the Flyers did. Willing to overlook the moves that other teams made and place doubt. Give optimism on the home team such as the goaltending holding up or Drysdale staying healthy.

So your bar for your top 6 players is to be better than Poehling? Give me a break. I dont care if both were still marginally better than Poehling, thats nowhere good enough. The fact that we have to compare them to Poehling is embarassing for them. Its unacceptable and they both deserved a kick in the rear end. I dont care who you are, if you are in the top 6 your play should not be comparable to Ryan Poehling |

I addressed both Goaltending and Drysdale in my comment if you bothered to read. They are going to be a bubble team regardless. That is a guarantee. Very little chance they are a bottom 10 team.

Where did I say that? What are you talking about? They're more than marginally better that Poehling. Couturier playing with a bad back is better! You don't get it. The point is that they're both better than Poehling, yet Tortorella will play Poehling more! Especially with Frost. Couturier it was a later in the season situation as he wore down.
In a must win game, Tortorella benches significantly better players to play Poehling 19 minutes as the 1C!

LOL, no what you did is look at it optimistically and gave a benefit of the doubt. Which you were unwilling to give to other teams. You're wrong that there is very little chance they are a bottom 10 team again. There is a very real chance that they are.
The Flyers are a team with questionable goaltending. No legitimate top defense pairing. Unless Couturier strongly rebounds, no legitimate 1C. All of the most important roles in the sport of hockey. |

Carolina is also a team with questionable goaltending.goal tending. Anderson is year older and has missed a lot of hockey the past 2 seasons. His backup is nothing to fear.
Probably another year of getting eliminated in the first round. So talent wise they may be better but in the end they are not too dissimilar from the Flyers. |

Every team can have issues and doubts. That's the point. You look at every other team and point out what's questionable while giving your home team the benefit of the doubt. That's being a homer!
Washington added 3 solid NHL players in DuBois, Mangiapane and Chychrun. They have a really solid goalie in Lindgren and have a legit #1 defenseman in Carlson. They play a strong team game and are a solid defensive team and they have one of the greatest players ever to play. On paper they're not at least equal if not better? |

The only message he sent was that he doesn't know what he is looking at. Coots and Frost playing at whatever level they were playing at was still better than Poehling. So Torts was telling the team that he would rather send a message on a must win game 82 than actually win the game. This is why he loses rooms.
Frost absolutely belongs in the NHL. He may not continue his career with the Flyers and will probably go and flourish somewhere else. Torts develops blind spots with players and IMO that is his greatest failing as a coach. He is inflexible and has no imagination as a strategist, a leader, or a teacher. He is a one trick pony as a NHL coach. Hell yes Frost needs to score, but the stats bear out pretty convincingly that he does contribute on both sides of the puck way more than Poehling ever does. Sure Poehling is out there for defense, and Frost plays better defense. Frost is better than Poehling in every aspect of hockey and every stat bears that out. Torts doesnt hold it against Poehling when he doesn't score as long as he plays the right way. Well, the stats say Frost plays the right way.
Its just like that Hartnell story. He gets it in his head that things are a certain way despite all the evidence to the contrary and he hurts the team and himself in the process. That is why he cant win in todays NHL and hasn't won anything in over 20 years. Nor will this team EVER win while he involved in any way.
