but yeah, there's a lot to consider there, hopefully there will be enough positive performances out of the pre-season to sort things out, instead of going with "who sucks less" lol... - Pat1993
I expect one of them to be the 13th forward the other probably the first call up of injuries.

for a 4.5M cap hit though teams will want to know what kind of season he's having, he surely doesn't have much value as we speak, if any. - Pat1993
It is not only the cap hit, but he has averaged less than 50 games played a year, over the last 4 years. Does a team want to trade for him now or wait 'til deadline to see if he is still healthy - cap considerations aside?
Trading Dvorak now solves a lot of problems. Worse case scenario he is gone by the TDL (or next summer, with 3-4 other guys).
I would like them to make room to see if Roy can be the real deal or not, rather than him stuck on the 4th line....

yup, but as you've pointed out yourself it's unlikely to happen now. the habs will surely be continuing to assign spots on the roster based on merit, so whatever works I'll be happy with... Roy will definitely get his chance, it would be silly not to give him one.

next year they'll have plenty of room for Roy. Armia, Dvorak, Evans, Pezzetta... will all be gone.
welcome to Montreal Demidov and Roy!

Plus all the cap space to maybe lock up a few players, with those guys (above) gone + Petry and Allen off the books too. And if Laine does not seem to work out (or worse, wants a poopload of money), that is another potential big cap hit off the books in 2 years, when they might want to use it even more.
HuGo have set themselves up to be in a really good place... cap wise and talent pool wise.

actually if he's asking for too much money but he's doing well it wouldn't be the worst, as he would have some trade value to be flipped.

Yeah, just mean (and I am tired, been up for almost 30 hours working, so perhaps I did not make it clear), the Habs would have the cap room to keep him or replace him.
It would be a decision of whether they want to play him $X dollars or not (or if they can find something better), not the cap would screwed them from doing it.

who knows, he could be the first hab since Vincent Damphouse to score 40 goals.

holy (frank) it's been a long time, jebus. - Pat1993
Patches had 39 one year, I think 38 too.
But yeah, a long time.
I still think this is a win either way that trade breaks, I think... I feel Laine can still put up points, but is he a 35+ goal / 70-80pts guy still? Does he play 70+ games?
That is the real question.
I set my expectations to about 25g + 25A - if he beats that, then good. If he does just that, I am fine with it and consider the trade a win (but not a long-term solution in the top 6).

I don't expect much from Laine for the upcoming season tbh. if he plays 50 games I'll be happy. the bar is low. so how many goals? I don't care.
the following season though it will be different. contract year, then he'll have a big season. 40+ goals

not sure about his exact medical history and the probabilities of re-injuring himself, but if Laine stays healthy, in a new environment, with a new coach and with the tools he's acquired to deal with his personal issues, I think the potential is definitely there for him to at least reach the 70pts mark, which most certainly would be a win.
and even if it does fail miserably for some reason, I wouldn't blame Hughes for trying it out, as it barely cost anything except for an extra dman and some cap space over the span of 2 years.

I get that, but I have the feeling he'll be motivated right out the gate, I don't think he'll want to wait until that contract year to start dishing out some goals.

Yeah, that is pretty much why I call it a win, regardless... worse case scenario you wasted cap space they were not using.
But I think he will be motivated to play hard... injuries might be the big factor in all of this.
