I saw that.
Quite the gamble.
Had he signed with the panthers he could have had a cup by now.
But he went for the toilet seat instead.

Is Robertson gonna cave and play?

Seems like a weird year to dig his heels in, seeing as he actually has a good chance of sticking with this lineup now that Bertuzzi is gone.

Cluster(frank) would be perfect. If he was 8 years younger.

Also...

Missing: One Nylander. Last seen with his gorgeous brother, shirtless.

It would be a colossal mistake to dig his heels in.

If he doesn't want to play, don't let him. You'd think a new coach and less depth opening up more spots would be seen as a plus, but oh well.

He'd smart to sign at least a 1 year deal to see how things go with the new coach.

Friedman says Leafs are looking for a LW, so they may have already decided to move on.

Well they do have a hole in their top 6 at that position.

Even if Robertson does sign, it's far from a certainty he can fill that role completely, either because of injury or just... not being good enough.

If he does sign, he'll get the best opportunity of his career until the Leafs can find something better to trade for during the season.

Robertson will sign. He has very little leverage.

Leafs will sign Habs legend craporretty.

Pretty wild how Robby doesn’t sign a one year prove it deal…there is a clear spot for him and it would be his to lose.

The dude is scared of Cowan, A Nylander and potential PTOs. He wants to go to San Jose and get gaurenteed playing time.

The message here, I'd think, to Robertson and his agent are that there is an opening at LW - they could take it, or continue to dig their heels in - in what could be a very bad place to dig in.

Right _now_ with 12F and 7D and 2G the Leafs have $875k available.

They can save $1.15m by burying Reaves as an example, so they have up to $2m available. If Hakanpaa starts on LTIR or has issues, obviously there is more space available but they need to keep some flexibility so they don't lose people on waivers or don't play short when minor injuries occur.

If I'm not mistaken the following are RFAs still: Swayman, Raymond, Seider, Perfetti, Mercer, Harley, Krebs, Kaliyev and Jarvis - all of whom I would offer sheet before Nick Robertson if I had an inclination to do so.

If Robertson opts to hold out and the Leafs decide to wait for fair value, Robertson may have a horribly long wait ahead of him. Having been considered an NHL-ready prospect for 4 years and playing just 87 games - sitting out isn't going to help him at all. It could be the type of decision that ends his career in Russia.

The smart play for both Toronto and Robertson is that he signs a one-year, shows what he has and earns it. Then he can be moved for fair value on both sides.

That and he’s nothing more than a late second rounder who would have likely been a third if Dubas wasn’t the GM.

Robertson is a point every two games player, and has zero defensive talent, he seriously isn’t that good.

Let's be fair to Nick Robertson - he looked pretty decent and competitive for a lot of the year. He's crafty but isn't the best skater. He works hard, but isn't always effective or accomplishing what he's trying to do.

We know he has defensive shortcomings - and he didn't play with Kampf on the checking line, for example, as a result of that. He did play 217 minutes with Domi as his centre (12GF / 10 GA), 127 minutes with Holmberg as his centre (9GF / 6GA) and 89 minutes with Tavares as his centre (6GF / 4GA).

He was 16th in the NHL in G/60 at 5v5, so he was making the most of the minutes he received and the minimal power play time he received (45 minutes) were negligible - but of his contemporaries on the Leafs who also received a glance of PP time, he did outperform Knies, McMann and Jarnkrok; he did have more PP points/60 than Bertuzzi or Domi.

I say this not to talk up Robertson too much but to note that he is much better than many want to dismiss him as being. He deserves a shot to stick in the top-6 and if he fails then he deserves a shot to prove that he can be effective secondary scoring - Daniel Sprong has carved out an entire career being what Nick Robertson presently is and I think Robertson can be more.
