He’s got almost no relevant skills relating to the modern game. He’s an old time defenseman in a world that has passed him by - picklerick

Although these types of positions always felt completely unecessary to me. Don’t get how they justify the salaries they cost |

jesus guys
not too long ago in early September people would be getting amped up, talking line combos, potential PTO invites, pre-season games, the schedule, anything
are people just done with this team? - jimbro83
Not many story lines heading in to camp. Team pretty much the same. Hope berard and othmann make the team.

Like staal, but agree they have gone this route of former players being skill coaches. Has not really worked out

The last time he was good was 2012/2013. He played for 10 more years after that. He’s got a case of hockey player over the age of 25 personality syndrome, which is to say, he has none. I don’t get the appeal from a skills or culture fit. He’s helping Hartford defensemen . WHY |

Judge said 10 years? Unbelievable! - Fenrir
I'm assuming NJ laws are relatively similar to NY here...but my best friend's sister died in 2000 when the drunk driver of the convertible she was in flipped it and killed her and another person. He only got 9 years.
So if the guy that killed the Gaudreau's has no priors (I have no idea if he does or doesn't), that sentence sounds about on par. |

Another person died along with my friend's sister, so it was two people that died in both instances.
I spent 10 minutes trying to find more info on her accident with no real luck but was at least able to find what he was charged with:
manslaughter in the second degree (two counts), vehicular manslaughter in the second degree (two counts), assault in the second degree, vehicular assault in the second degree, and driving while intoxicated
If I recall, there was a fourth person in the car in addition to my friend's sister and the other one that died (and the driver) that lived...which would explain the singular assault and vehicular assault charges. |

Based on my extremely limited understanding of this kind of thing, i think that stacking charges helps with expediting convictions/pleas and reduces the chances of costly and lengthy trials

He is a guy that sustained major eye and head injuries, as well as whatever other more minor afflictions, but managed to keep himself in good enough shape to still be in the league at 37 and play over 1100 games. All while blocking almost 1450 shots and dishing out well over 1600 hits.
None of you think he might have some knowledge to share about keeping yourself ready to play in the league? I don't have a definition of Player Development, but it doesn't have to just mean on ice play. |

This is like some weird silly version of survivorship bias. Maybe you don't want the guy who was a magnet for head injuries teaching the youts how to keep their heads up?
Half joking here.... But none of this changes anything about anything. It's just a way to get a former players name in the org and drum up some PR. I just think he's so boring and can't possibly relate to 20 year old defensemen from a hockey or just hanging out and not being weird perspective to the point that it makes me laugh a bit |

Dude, he got a major concussion from squaring off to throw punches with his own brother and was never the same again. That is a far cry from not knowing how to keep his head up. That is actually a guy that has proven he will do anything for his team.
I'm not trying to crusade on Staal's behalf, nor do I believe he is some saviour. But, it seems silly and arrogant to be so negative toward a guy that literally bled for the NYR over him getting a position that none of us even know the parameters of. Do you know what his duties will be? If not, how can you feel justified in saying he's not qualified to do it? We literally know nothing here. |

His duties as i understand them are as a skills coach for the Hartford defensemen. I cannot imagine it would make a difference if it were him, someone else, or no one doing that job. I think he's really, really, boring and uncharismatic. Like a huge percentage of NHL players. Sue me |

Fair enough. He's certainly quite vanilla. I just don't dismiss the effect of mentorship from someone that played 17 seasons in the NHL on young players trying to get there. Regardless of his pedigree, that has to contain many useful pieces of information. |

I’ll never forget the Staal eye injury, that was one of the more scarier moments for a rangers player that I can remember. Seeing his eyeball go back into his skull basically
Good for him getting this job, he was a good Ranger. |

Still think Berard is a long shot without blowing everyone away at camp. Where do we realistically slot Othmann if he makes the team?
Would hope the org wouldn’t strong him along as the 13F. |
