Buying him out would be colossally stupid but then again, this is the Flyers. The termination is about more than not being able to demote him to the minors or to buy him out. - MJL
100% agree. Just saying the Flyers are pressing the issue because RyJo took away their options and they believe he could play. The Flyers also do not want him on the NHL roster. They are just playing the cards they were dealt.
I have no doubt if healthy RyJo would never be on the NHL roster this season.

There are other cap reasons besides that. With Michkov on board, it can also affect bonus overages the following season. - MJL
Bonus overage, the reason DB wouldn't sign Cutter.
The Flyers are in a much different cap situation next year though than they were with Cutter but I'm sure they want every penny to sign the most expensive free agents they can find.

I don't believe it is about the Flyers options taken away. A player placed on LTIR for the season, is not on the roster. Ellis isn't hanging around the team and neither would Johansen if that was the situation. The Flyers don't want him to play anywhere in the organization. Which is why they are taking this route for termination.

Not sure how Edmonton will have the money for Bouchard given the contract they just game Draisaitl, with McDavid on deck. Paying Nurse $9M was an absolute joke, but its as I mentioned previously, just because teams throw 1D contracts at players doesn't mean they are. - jd250
They will find a way, look at Toronto, 50% of the salary cap invested in 4 players. Just find decent players you don't have to pay that much.

One of the reasons given but I believe that was a smoke screen.
The Flyers will be in a worse cap situation next year with having to re-sign York, Foerster, Frost and Cates. They get some help with the Angelo buyout and the Petersen buried cap hit coming off.

If Johansen is faking an injury, I'm fine with the Flyers pursuing it. It never made sense that he played 63/63 games for the Avs and then was suddenly hurt after the trade happened. According to Friedman, he wasn't missing practices in Colorado, either. |

So much for getting out of cap jail. The Flyers are already paying nearly $30 mill for their top 4 players (that aren't on LTIR). |

My feeling is the only reason the Flyers are doing this is because they need the money to make a move to sign/trade someone, otherwise, why bother? If true, it will affect the team if they win. - Flyers_01
They are doing it to not have to use LTIR from day one. Everyday day they are under they can bank cap and either use it later in the season or to pay off Michkov’s likely bonuses without having to use next years capspace. |

miss the playoffs for 4 straight years. Average at best prospect pool. capped out. 1 legit potential top end player. flyers in a great spot going forward.
they had plenty of chances to move players to not have to use LTIR. |

Yup.
I am sure the plan when they traded for him was to buy him out, which would have only cost them $1.33m in 24-25 and 25-26. Nashville would have paid the other half of the buyout.

Also to maybe weaponize cap space at the trade deadline to take on an expiring contract to get a draft asset. (if they are smart)

The good thing about this situation is that Briere has bet it all so to speak on the 2025 draft. Either they get a 1C and add some better depth or his tenure is completely sunk. |

I do not believe they will keep all those picks in the 2025 draft. No issue with that at all depending on how they use them.
Also think it is also them kicking the can down the road saying 2025 is a big draft for the flyers. just take some of the spotlight off for a bit. then they may say 2026 is even bigger or what not or if they trade some early 2025 picks. |

The Flyers will most likely be in LTIR at some point. You have to have a legitimate grievance that a player is violating the terms of his contract to move for termination. |

He better get that lifeboat. Right now, they could legitimately have 3 of the top 15 prospects in the NHL as their property. With Gauthier, Michkov and Buium. Along with Bonk who is in the top 50 or so. That would be a nice crop to build around and to feel good about it. Instead they just have Michkov, Luchanko, who is ranked around the 75th best prospect in hockey (who could rise certainly in the next year) and a question mark in Drysdale |

Flyers Dr confirmed injury - corduroy
My guess and it's just a guess. I think it has to do with Johansen not being willing to accept the treatment prescribed in an attempt to drag out the situation and get paid without having to play. The Flyers don't want to pay someone 4M when he is not genuinely attempting to get healthy to play |

what I would like to know is did RYJO pass his end of year physical? If not what was the recommended course of action from the flyers doctors? |

that would be flat out dumb for him to not adhere to the recommended treatment as that would be grounds for termination. I believe the agent also said he has followed everything or something to that effect. |
