Well, he is kind of steal in that at the 13th pick he earned his way onto the roster, and did not look out of place. Of course, he isn't fully developed yet.. needs to wait until age 21 or so to see what he really is. I will remind you that he was 1 of four players from his draft class to play lots of NHL games... Picks 1, 2, 3 and 13... That is it. Oh, and he outscored the 2nd and 3rd picks.
Nowhere did I say he was the equivalent of pastaboy. - IonSabres

but pastaboy is what I consider to be a steal of a player in the first round outside of the top 10 pick
other teams get pasta, bratt, point, robertson, kaprizov
and we get the 1st round outcasts like krebs, greenway, jost, jokers |

you stay on the hopes and dreams of players taking the next 4 steps in the blue and gold
I have seen so many of them never take that step
how many all star skaters have we drafted outside the top 5 over the last 30 years?
soupy and who else? |

I get it. It's just funny that we get several of these articles every year. The Sabres are always stealing somebody. Another day, another draft steal - Hank Balling
everyone gets them and it's noteworthy when your fifth round pick wins MVP.

Alex Tuch, Tage Thompson and Bo Byram are also first round outcasts. I don't even know what your point is.

If you could go back a year, would you want Benson on the roster, or would you make different moves in the offseason?
I view last year as poor management and not Benson really earning it. It's inexplicable to bring VO back last year and sign Jost as your depth to handle a Quinn injury. - Lunaion
Well, I was born into a middle-class family that has both parents working hard to pay the bills and provide for the family. Dad was proud of his lawn too! His parents were small business entrepreneurs carving out their place in America having come from Germany. Mom's parents were hard working Irish Immigrants. So, I have an affinity for hard working people that hold themselves accountable. They never relied on any form of government assistance, never took a dime from family nor friends.
So, while I understand every team is unique, I just can't take help from others. I think most Sabres Fans want to turn the page forward, not backward and appreciate what we have to not be burdened by what we don't have so that we have a more positive outlook specifically, in general. |

we did not draft them
which is my point
we drool over our prospects and in 30 years, we have only picked 3 skaters to play in an all star game for the sabres that was picked outside the top 5
soupy, girgens and pommer
could be the worst result of all the teams over the last 30 years
but money is not an issue with the sabres

As a 7th round pick I think you can subjectively consider anyone from that round playing NHL games a steal. Certainly one with three 20 goal seasons. |

Without verifying that stat, no wonder we've sucked forever. It's certainly not indicative of team play but it's fascinating none the less.
Also at play are popularity contests that load the vote in box with laffs and rags, so that never helps. Then you get to send one player and usually your best player is the highest drafted one. I'd be interested to see the Caps all Star record with the same variables.
This team has a horrendous ten year draft gap from like 2006-2016. So I mean if Dahlin doesn't go every year, or Tage, or Tuch, who's better than them? I think the standard of issue here is a problem, not necessarily the top 5 argument. |

I don't need the validation that Quinn, Benson, Peterka, Cozens, UPL etc don't get an all star game invite. It's irrelevant.
What matters for those kind of players is, what are you contributing on the score sheet and are you tipping the ice in your favor. One of those guys needs to probably be an 80-90 point player or to be a literal brick wall to beat out Dahlin. |

Dude, I have a hard time remembering this morning and you want me to go back a year or more?
I'll say this, I wanted Kevin to make several trades and FA acquisitions at G, Top 4 D, 3rd Pair D, and really wanted Okposo and Girgensons replaced.
I was not pulling for Benson as the Pick, think I wanted a D there... Can't remember honestly.
I have always advocated for trades and continue to do so. I'm fine to trade 1sts IF the return seems so.
I will say, going forward it will be important to have a well stocked pipeline (not 374) on ELC's ready to plug into the roster for Cap Purposes.
Not sure I answered your question? |
