Torts coming out swinging this training camp! Says he's gonna focus more on the offensive end of things! Eh what?
- Phillywhiteout

Also said he would not coach MM on the offensive sides of things -- so there is that

Torts said no FA’s for 2 more years, all growth must come from who they have.
- wcorvette

Unless an under 27 legit top pairing defenseman magically becomes available to them, which never happens, then I’m absolutely fine with this.

Guy is maddening, says the right stuff, wants to still play fast but work on how to score dirty goals as play gets tighter. Then the next sentence he says we have to learn how to finish, and we know he over uses the grinders, what does he expect.
- wcorvette

He said exactly what we have been complaining about. That he develops tunnel vision and blind spots. This time he was talking about the team play style but he could have just as easily been talking about certain players. His rigidity is always his downfall. It is good he recognizes he should have coached adjustments to play style depending on game situations, and will work on the teams offensive strategies.

Anyone think Farabee could lead the team in goals this year?

The other thing he said which I think is super important is this is his 3rd year with most of these players, so they know him now and he knows them, thus his coaching style has to change. I hope to see that this season. As Couts said on Snow the Goalie, just leave me a lone and let me be a hockey player.

Who would sit there and watch 33 minutes of that? It's easy for Ristolainen to figure that out. Just skate in a circle. He can handle that.
- MJL

I love watching NHL players skate and practice, ever since I was a kid. There is something magical about it to me. At one time in my life I coulddo these drills on my dominant side, but if I had to do the same drills on my other side like these players did, I would have collapsed half way through.

no top end free agents are coming here anyway in the next 2 years. moot point

find it funny the coach is making these statements not the gm.

Pretty much. He's 66 years old and all of a sudden discovers this new fangled thing called offense which he always claimed was for teenagers and ne'er do wells? What's next, deescalating conflicts?

I'm all for coaches tweaking and improving their offensive systems but first they had actual offensive systems.

My guess is that comcast gave him talking points. Comcast has been spin controlling the poop out of the New Era of Orange since it started.

You really think that's gonna happen in the heat of battle with Torts? I think he really does try to do the right thing on many occasions, but then his emotions get the better of him. I can't say that I really see that changing.

So the guy basically says what you want to hear, and yet, you still find a way to put a negative spin on it. Yippee!

I'll explain. Sometimes the whining about Torts on here is over the top. Yes, some is certainly warranted, but some folks on here blame Torts for anything that is rotten in their own lives.

For those that never played the game at any level, its a punishment. For the rest of us, its called conditioning. I think people around here have watched the movie Miracle too many times.

I agree with your assessment. The only thing that has to change really is the use of younger players. If for example Andrae or Attard show they are NHL defenseman, Briere has to do the right thing and move out some veterans and let them play. The GM sets the roster, and Briere can really take some of the veteran options away from Torts. Look, at the end of the day, Torts, like any good coach, is wired to win, and will play the players that he feels gives the team the best chance to win. Torts is not thinking about tomorrow, he is thinking about the present and trying to win this game.

Folks today are generally softer. It's actually kind of a weird variance. People in general are so easily offended these days and yet we seem to live in a more violent world than ever. Or is it just that we hear about EVERYTHING in this era. I mean, a sheriff shoots and kills a judge in his chambers yesterday after an argument. Eh what?

It can be used as punishment, sure. But this bag skate is about seeing where your players are in their conditioning coming into camp. Just watch it and you can see how it tells you a lot about each player. You can see players like Frost and even Deslauriers handling it well. But then you see rookies like Michkov that looked really shaky. It also tells you a lot about the player's mindset. Will they persevere and get through it even if they have to crawl to the finish line, or will they quit. Michkov I heard almost quit yesterday, but I am really glad he didn't, and I heard his teammates were really pushing him which is a good sign.

We both know this will not happen. Plus, what veteran are they going to move? They had this opportunity and passed when they re-signed Seeler. As well as EJ to an extent. Zamula is the only one who may be in danger. That is pure stupidity.

Correct about the coach and his goal is to win. Then play who will give him that chance. However, when the coach is calling a lot of the shots at the NHL level it doesn't help with what you're saying.

You also have to have your GM and coach aligned for the direction the team is taking.
