Anyone else sick and tired of this stupid rope thing? For three years that’s the BIG story. Torts and his f0@k!ng rope/bag skate. - mikeyo27
It's not that I'm sick of hearing about the dreaded rope, it's just that I really never understood what the rope's significance actually was. You separate the nets, you skate around the nets.
Now if they had to double Dutch after each sprint, then it would make sense. |

Not sure what your point is.
1. I already linked to the FBI site which shows data is in fact available for NYPD.
2. This data shows a large decline in violent crime, so even if NYPD stats are omitted from some national stats, there would be no difference in the main point that crime rates have declined massively.
3. The fact that crime is "historically high" is easily disproved by just glancing at the graph I included in my post. - PT21
The amount of reporting on crime is historically high. The 24 hour news cycle is the reason we think it is higher than it ever was. We hear about every crime from every city because it drives ratings and clicks.
Crime reporting used to be local, now its national. So it feels like there is more of it. |

Stopped off at FTC for an hour or so today. I watched the end of one scrimmage and the beginning of another. Coots and Drysdale looked to be skating well. Standouts to me were Frost, Lycksell, and Email. Frost looked like the fastest most skilled guy out there to me. Coots and TK had some good uptempo shifts in the first scrimmage, but looked like they were taking it easier in the second. Hathaway works hard every time he’s out there. Michkov made some impressive passes. He’s listed at 5’10” on the Flyers site, but looked like the littlest guy out there to me. He looked like he was dragging a bit to me. Maybe he’s still worn out from the rope test? |

Don't be surprised if Torts sends him down before camp ends like he did with York. |

The other thing he said which I think is super important is this is his 3rd year with most of these players, so they know him now and he knows them, thus his coaching style has to change. I hope to see that this season. As Couts said on Snow the Goalie, just leave me a lone and let me be a hockey player. - jd250
Tortorella is rigid and set in his ways. Any talk of change from him, is just that, talk. He has to have drama and confrontation.

Considering cyber crime was virtually non existent in 1993 you are most likely correct. - MBFlyerfan
My point was more about how crime overall may not be as far down as the data makes it seem. Your stuff is still getting taken. People aren't breaking into your house to do it though.

would be 100% pure entertainment. as mentioned, if they do, he has the option of going back to Russia I believe.
part of me hopes the has a so so camp just for that factor. |

For those that never played the game at any level, its a punishment. For the rest of us, its called conditioning. I think people around here have watched the movie Miracle too many times. - jd250
LOL, actually its both. Obviously the skate yesterday wasn't punishment for anyone. There is ooddles of documented cases of coaches using bag skates for punishment. You yourself have frequently called for bag skates for the team when they haven't played well. |

I would say yes. Cyber crimes are under reported for sure.
For example, your credit card data gets taken. How do you handle that? Get the account shut off and get a new card. Police are not involved at all in most cases. How is that data reported.

If crime rates are up, the police force would clamor to make that data public, because it would mean public demand for more resources to them. - PT21
Nah, the tendency in most departments is to play games with the numbers to make crime look like it's better than it is for political reasons. If crime is "under control" then it makes everybody look good... from the mayor to the city council to the commissioner to the district commanders, etc. People care about their own careers more than than anything else.
With that said the one crime that can't be downgraded or fudged are murders... hard to make bodies disappear... and the homicide rate has fallen from almost 10 per 100,000 down to 5-6 per 100,000 since the 90's. About the same rate as all other violent crimes.
Might not feel like it based on social media and the news cycle but it's the safest it's ever been in America right now. Much more likely to get scammed than physically harmed these days. |

At the end of the day Torts benched Frost and Brink because he doesnt trust them enough to put them out in those situations. Frankly if I was coach I wouldnt have played Brink either. He was disappointing for most the season. The only forwards with less points than Brink last season where Cates, Hathaway and Deslaurier. Pehling had more points than Brink. So benching him I dont have an issue with.
Frost on the other hand should have been played. He was the best C on the team at the time. Couturier was basically dead. He shouldnt have been in the lineup and the funny thing is the whole Torts scratching Coots thing was done because Torts knew Coots wouldnt use the injury as an excuse and sit voluntarily. He should not have been playing at all. It showed in his play he couldnt play through it. Poehling had a great season given his limited skill. The only reason for not playing Frost IMO would be to force him to earn time rather than having him given the time because everyone else is garbage. That would suggest to me he isnt as hung up on winning games as he says he is.
Frankly I dont think it really mattered who was out there. I dont think theres a scenario where we win that game - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Here are some facts for you.
Frost P/60 1.77 GF/60 2.45 GA/60 1.91 GF% 56.25
Brink P/60 1.59 GF/60 2.52 GA/60 2.05 GF% 55.10
Poehling P/60 1.28 GF/60 2.05 GA/60 2.69 GF% 43.24
Couturier P/60 1.53 GF/60 2.81 GA/60 3.18 GF% 46.94
As you can see, all three of those players are better than Poehling. You say that Poehling had more points than Brink. No kidding. Brink spent too much time scratched. Poehling played 935.28 at 5 on 5. Brink played 642.31. A big difference of 322.97 minutes of 5 on 5 ice time. Brink scored at a higher rate and he was better defensively than Poehling. You're also wrong about Couturier. He was still, even at less than 100%, one of the top 12 forwards on the team. Poehling is a nice add but he is a 4th line role player in this league. The coach overplayed him and underplayed Brink. Especially for a so called rebuilding team. In the Washington game, they lost 2-1. Tortorella benched two better offensive players with better defensive numbers and played Poehling 19 minutes. Tortorella is an ass. |

quick question for you cliff.
if you were coaching would you strictly go by what the numbers tell you or is there more to it than that on a game-by-game basis? |

Obviously, Briere did just fine in the NHL, but MM certainly isn't physically imposing. |

Someday you'll learn that those are the results of playing the game on the ice, but I doubt it. It's really a dumb statement by you. It's simple data that shows that the conclusions the poster made, are not accurate of what happened on the ice. As well not accounting for things such as simple ice time

All good points, with some minor caveats not worth mentioning.
I would say that for the average Joe, the chance of being a victim of violent crime is even lower than the current figures suggest. That is because these stats are heavily correlated with neighborhoods and drug wars. Stay away from certain areas and certain people, and your chances are much lower than the 5-6 per 100k.
This is not to say that crime rates are acceptable. Not by any means. But I don't see any data to justify the current hysteria.

Looks like it was Aug 28, actually. Essentially, the grade was for doing nothing.
Philadelphia Flyers: B-
They're essentially running it back with the team that was in the playoff race until Game 82. The big difference: Skilled forward Matvei Michkov came over from Russia earlier than expected and should push for rookie of the year. Cam Atkinson was bought out and the Flyers terminated the contract of Ryan Johansen, who never played for them after a trade. That move is being challenged.
