General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the #Canucks have agreed to terms with G Kevin Lankinen on a one-year contract worth $875K.
Seems like good value.
Hopefully this allows Demko to take all the time he needs to recover and be ready to take the reigns later in the season. - dbot
I wonder if Lankinen or Silovs will get the majority of starts |

Good question, hopefully they both have solid seasons.
Maybe we can LTIR Demko all year and give him the Mark Stone treatment.

That's exactly what I said...."You don't just get paid for what you've done". Meaning scoring 102 points, he's also getting paid on the potential that he'll do it again, or close to it. - Pacificgem
But isn't that apples and oranges then because Petey is getting paid on the bet he will repeat, while Geunther is getting paid for something he hasn't done at all yet?
You also said it was a good contract for the Coyotes |

Tougher to do with a goalie, seems to take longer for them to round into form. I like the idea though |

To some degree, yes, it is. I would guess that Armstrong feels strongly enough that he's seen enough of Geunther to sign him to that deal. Like the Oilers did, same principal, when they signed Draisaitl to what turned out to be a steal of a contract right out of his ELC.
Look...Bill Armstrong isn't Jim Benning, this is a smart hockey man, I think he knows what he's doing. Sure, they all make mistakes, but clearly he believes in the player and what he did with the team in 45 games last year. It also gives the organization financial certainty with one of their best young players. |

We've had such incredibly poor GM's over our history our fans think all GM's are idiots. LOL. There's actually some good ones out there. |

Ohtani is just so good, what can you say, he's a world class player. Just like Freddy (Elias) Pettersson. Dbacks have slid a bit lately but they're still right there in the wild card spot for the NL.
Pettersson has earned his contract, that's why management gave it to him lol. You keep operating that shovel and let the Canucks management, who've done an amazing job in a short period of time, do the contract thing.
Winning is a team aspect, which is a collective accomplishment by several different individuals. Players get paid to produce, which Pettersson has done! Over the past two seasons he's 10th in total points, over three seasons he's 17th, out of 750-800 players. It isn't about what he gets this season, for money, it's about how he performs over the life of the contract. His past performance would indicate it's a fair contract for both sides.

Great news! Lanky is a really solid backup and secured for a peasants wage. Think he was making over $2MM on his last contract and only 29 years old |

I never said I thought the GM was an idiot, and for the record I'm not against paying young guys early to get ahead of the curve. But with Guenther specifically it feels like an overpay to me.
I can't see him raising his value much higher than 7-8 mil over the lifetime of the deal, so I just don't see it saving the team money, even in the long run. I think if you bridge him for 1 or 2 years, there is very little danger of having to pay him more than they already have. But hey, maybe I'm wrong and he scores 40 goals this season |

That's the million dollar question, right, will he or won't he. If they signed him to a three year deal and he scores between 30-40 over that time-frame, he'd cost them 10 million to re-sign. Everything is hypothetical at this point. Time will be the only thing that says if it was a good bet or not. |

Should secure them the option to trade Demko later in the season if they like depending on how Silovs is playing.

Would you gamble your playoffs on a GT that sat out all season after recovering from an injury? Sounds risky.
