20 points and a plus 14 with a clueless coach playing 19 minutes
if he gets that up to 30 points and a plus 18, nice payday for joker next summer |

Which players have helped themselves the most in training camp and preseason to this point? Who still has more to prove?

The author suggests that Zachary Benson is 19 years of age. This couldn't be farther from the truth. I don't trust our media.

"Ruff hasn’t tried to hide his excitement about Zach Benson. The 19-year-old winger has made a quick impression on his new coach because of the way he competes on pucks and always does the right things in all three zones. That attention to detail is why Ruff said he’s starting to feel really comfortable with how Benson plays.
“Watching a lot of games, I liked him,” Ruff said. “I think I like him more now through practice and through games, he does a lot of good things.”
Now Benson will get a chance to play on the second line with Dylan Cozens and Jack Quinn. He’s also working on the second power-play unit. That should make it easy for Benson to increase his point totals from a season ago. And his mentality to be a pest in front of the net and win one-on-one battles for loose pucks will fit perfectly with how Ruff wants the Sabres to play on the power play." |

Sabres had 6 Players on that list, in order of 5 Tier Categories:
-Power, Tier 3 - Allstar
-Benson, Tier 4 - Star
-Helenius, Tier 4 - Star
-Peterka, Tier 4 - Star
-Kulich, Tier 5 - Support
-Ostlund, Tier 5 - Support
No Tier 1 - MVP, nor Tier 2 - Franchise Sabre Prospect/Players were listed (must under 23 yo).
Do we think the Sabres have an MVP or Franchise Player (23 and over to cover what wasn't included in that list)?
Dahlin likely would come in as a Franchise Player, which is described as a top 30 player in the league, I don't see him rated as MVP as a Top 10 player in the league.
Another Article by Dom Luszczyszyn which analyzed the last 10 years of SC winners revealed that those teams had roster construction of 1 Franchise or MVP player and at least another Franchise Player in the Forward ranks, plus an All Star at the Goalie position in addition to the same on D as the Forwards.
At D, the Sabres are in good shape with Dahlin and Power...assuming Power continues to develop. Also, Byram could be in that 3rd Tier along with Power if he continues to improve.
At G, they could be in decent shape with UPL and Levi..hopefully biting at the level Boston enjoyed with Ulmark and Swayman.
Forward is the concern for me. Arguably their best Player is Tage. He could be A Franchise level if, once again he improves his game and production. Do the Sabres have another Tier 2 Player? I'd say no, and I don't see them developing one into a top 30 player in the league.
I am ready for a blockbuster trade to acquire one, and this is the time to do it by involving the '25-1st round pick to help bolster the value of the return package. |

Those rankings do seem pretty good. I'm a little surprised Byram didn't get any tier, if I'm reading this correctly. I think JJP is the only one with a shot a Tier 2 still. Quinn has an outside chance.
And I think most of us have been pounding the table for this type of trade for 2-3 years. While I would still insist on top3 protection, it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker for the right player. Does Ehlers qualify (if extended) for you? Or, I guess, what caliber player or example, would suffice in your eyes? |

Yeah, read those reports too. No way to tell. He hasn't signed an extension, so it's a possibility. I was more thinking on the level of player. Ehlers isn't a franchise tier player is all. If we're looking for our Tkachuk (actual Franchise player) we may have to both up the offer and narrow the search. Just curious what everyone was hoping for. |

Some of this has to be players aging out, right? Quinn and Byram are 23 now.

Byram is now 23, so he just misses the cut to be included in that ranking.
I love JJP, but I don't see him as a Top 30 in the league, I agree Quinn has an outside chance, but man "availability" is the key for him.
That really crystallized it for me, they need a bit more true top-end talent. IMO, they can't wait for next offseason, and boy is it late to do it before then.
Those rankings were done with 24 NHL Scouts, so it should be a good representative view into how the league views these players. If Benson, JJP, and Helenius are all viewed similarily I would include one of them along with the '25-1st, '26_1st and more in a package for that level of talent. |

So, only the ranked Prospects & Players under 23 in Tier 2 are:
Celebrini,
Michkov,
Stutzle,
Fantilli,
Wyatt Johnson,
Faber,
Carllson
That's the level your looking for.
Over 23, likely targets are your top 30 players, depending on how you define them...those are defined in the article as "Someone who is the best player on a contending team or second best on a championship-caliber team. An unquestionably elite player".

If JJP can put up 35 and crack that top25 in scoring, I think it would warrant a debate. Agreed fully on Quinn, another injury riddled season and he'd be approaching bust territory simply on that fact.
I clenched a little at the idea of trading Benson, JJP, Helenius and a 1st for anyone in this league that doesn't wear #97, but I assume based on that package you're big game hunting...which I can't argue with.
Well said Ion. Well said.
I do worry we're sliding back into the place where we were under Regier towards the end, where we're too good to pick top3, but not enough to ever make noise in the post season. |

Have to assume none of those players would be traded under any circumstances. So we're basically looking for someone of that caliber who is older? Rantanen fit the bill? He's the one definite elite player that comes to mind, who may be able to be had due to contract status. |
