Im torn bc I can see both sides of it. If I trusted the team to build their roster the right way I would understand not paying him. But I do not - nyrangers2
I don’t understand why people feel this way. This team has been arguably a top 5 team in the NHL for the last 2-3 years. I get it we measure success by cups, but what more could you ask for right now. We’re close. At least closer then 20-25 other teams across the NHL

I could be wrong, but I think the thought is the Rangers are too special teams heavy and not as good at 5x5 as other contenders. Which I don’t disagree with. Shesty helps those special teams numbers. If we had an average goalie (which would save money), would we invest that money to get significantly better 5x5?

5v5 we are bad but the problem is Mikas line isnt getting it done. If his line produces, its a different game!!
I think they should trade Kakko now for some assets. There are a lot of players knocking on the door and he hasn’t shown a reason he belongs more than any of them. Will also create some cap space and additional assets for the TDL.

The rangers have added really good individual talent. They are an opportunistic team that relies on talent to do well. Heavily on goaltending and special teams. I’d prefer if they focused more on 5v5 play and being harder to play against. Talent alone has not been enough. That’s all. I still give them a ton of credit for what they have done. Just not sure they finish the job

Yea you understand where I’m going with this. Just not sure the formula they keep trying will get them to the promised land. Last 10
Cup winners finish top 10 5v5. Rangers are usually 15-20.

what does this mean though, because the Rangers scored 282 goals last year, 65 on the powerplay
actually, the Rangers were 10th overall in even strength goals last year with 205, but only 9 goals behind Vancouver who was 5th overall in even strength goals with 214

All advanced metrics had them around 15-20. xGF, xGA, ozone possession etc. Rangers as I said are an opportunistic team that can score goals bc of their talent. They would win games they were outplayed for stretches of the game and scored goals in bunches. Not sure that is sustainable

It feels like all they really need is for Mika’s to produce if everything else stays roughly the same
Scoring goals at 5v5 is very small part of being good 5v5 when you peel things back. If people hate these types of metrics then they wont hold much stock into it. But the last 10 cup winners have been top 10 in those categories. Only outlier were the caps in 2018
Scoring a lot of goals at 5v5 can be misleading. Does not mean you are outplaying the opponent consistently. Rangers are great at taking advantage of opportunities they get but do not always control or dictate the game
