my luke warm take
Berube is not a better coach than Keefe...just shuffling stuff around.
think we will see similar results..just in a different way.
hope im wrong - senstroll
Was Dan Bylsma a better coach than Michel Therrien? Was Darryl Sutter truly a super genius? Or were they just the right guys at the right time? I think Keefe was the right guy at the right time to replace Babcock. We'll have to wait and see, but I think Keefe ran out of track here and they couldn't run him back. |

After only 2 preseason games? Probably too early to tell anything at this point, no? At least IMO......but I havent even watched a preseason game yet.
I think with any coach, its just a matter of shuffling things around and a change in how they present certain messages and asks.
Keefe was a fine coach, but I think his message and how he ran things just became stale and we weren't getting results in the post season - year after year.
As for the results, I would think we would see similar reg season results....maybe even less points as other teams have improved and the leafs seem to want to try new things (willie at center etc). But if the "different way" changes the team mentality on certain things, maybe it helps to improve the post season results. But that remains to be seen and is 8 months away.
We'll see.
For me, I gotta give Berube time before I judge anything. Im not expecting a huge difference (hoping the constant mash up of lines slows down eventually - keefe was non-stop with that), but I gotta give him at least 30 -40 games. |

It's a bit tough to say - this roster was still largely constructed by Dubas & Keefe - Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, Marner, Kampf, Jarnkrok, McMann, Knies, Robertson and Holmberg up front with Rielly, Liljegren, McCabe and Timmins on the back-end.
The new faces that were brought in under Treliving but still likely somewhat approved by or involving Keefe were Domi, Reaves, Dewar and Benoit.
The new guys that have arrived since Berube took over? Tanev, Ekman-Larsson and Hakanpaa - and probably Pacioretty and perhaps Lorentz.
So the incremental steps that are being taken here are to apply more smart physicality, especially in the D-zone - which Tanev and Hakanpaa can do (Tanev is less hitting, but still grinding work) and Benoit and McCabe should step up more for. You still need to move the puck, so ideally the presence of some more physical D opens room for the puck movers in Rielly, OEL, Liljegren or Timmins to make those outlet passes or skate with the puck knowing that someone has their back.
Up front we have Knies and McMann who are likely able to play more physical and due to the general lack of large or physical players, Lorentz may have a doorway to this roster.
I'm not sure Berube is a "better" coach, but his style is simpler, safer and gives the defense more support - which does make the forwards have to lift heavier to get their goals - but if our forwards are as skilled as we keep claiming they are, they'll make it happen.
I do believe that simple and safe hockey - when done effectively - wins in the playoffs often more than not. |

actually no, didnt watch any and havent paid much attention so far to the on ice stuff.
moreso based on career.
and maybe its a bit more to do with the Leafs team not really fitting his style...no matter how hard he tries to force the square peg into a round hole

An interesting thing to note about Berube's cup winning St. Louis Blues - the guys who threw the fewest hits - Thomas, O'Rielly, Pietrangelo, Dunn and Parayko - were the guys they leaned on the most (not so much Thomas or Dunn in that season - although Dunn did play a sort of 4/5 role depending on situation). If you're doing your job, winning battles, and you're reliable and positionally smart, that's all he needs - but he does want a more active forecheck and more d-zone presence and responsiblity from the forwards - so it is something that all of Domi (decent forecheck, poor D-zone), Nylander (ok forecheck, poor D-Zone), Marner (poor forecheck, good D-Zone) and Robertson (ok forecheck, poor D-Zone) are all going to work at improving.
I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

Matthews, Marner and Willie were pre Dubie and keefe, no?
But ya pretty much the same team as last year, outside of 3-4 players or so. |

Well if the leafs continue to get tossed in the first round, it could be time for major player changes. But that's a long ways away. |

Pretty interesting thing going on in college football.
The QB for UNLV alleges he was promised $100K in NIL money, but hasn't received it, so he has essentially quit the team.
UNLV boosters say that they never promised him the money.
College sports are basically pro now, so expect to see a lot more of this poop.
In hockey, there's a Canadian kid who's suing to be able to play in the NCAA after having played for the CHL - his point is that hockey is treated differently from all other sports (apparently you can make money in tennis and still be NCAA-eligible).
Strange times. |

June 2014: Leafs draft Wille.
July 2014: Shanny hires Dubie as Assistant GM. Pretty sure this is when they also name him GM of Marlies.
April 2015: Leafs fire Nonis as GM.
June 2015: Keefe hired as coach of the Marlies.
June 2015: Leafs draft Mitchie, with Hunter and Dubie serving as interim co-GMs.
July 2015: Leafs hire Lou as GM, name Hunter and Dubie stay as Assistant GMs.
June 2016: Leafs draft Matthews
May 2018: Leafs name Dubie GM of the Leafs. |

So was Rielly - but Dubas was the AGM when Matthews and Marner were drafted. Willy was drafted by Nonis; Rielly was drafted by Burke. |

The only nice thing I’ve liked with berube so far in preseason is he is already starting the guys who are going to play for this team together. Use to piss me off when Keefe would shuffle the lineup 27 different ways and the leafs would come out flat with no chemistry. |

"In Florida's Big Bend area south of Tallahassee, from Carrabelle to the Suwannee River, forecasters expected the water to reach 15-20 feet above ground if the storm surge's peak occurred at the same time as high tide. Other areas could see anywhere from 3-15 feet of water, the hurricane center warned. Fifteen to 20 feet of water would be enough to cover a two-story house, Parkinson pointed out."

Everyone's making money except the talent.
I'm glad the players are finally getting wise.
The whole idea of "amateur athletics" was just a way for the upper classes to keep the working class out of sports. It's always been a giant lie.
Hell, the original Olympics was for professional athletes. |

Some reporter asked Berube if it was time to panic after two straight losses. To his credit he held it together, but it took some effort. |

I haven't seen the clip, but is it fair to assume the question was tongue in cheek? |
