The Luchanko has earned a spot on the team discourse really takes me back.
https://www.nj.com/flyers..._topic_can_18-year_o.html
it should come as no surprise that Scott Laughton, who will be just 18 when the Flyers open training camp, is being talked about as a potential sleeper to make the roster this season.
Laughton, who was drafted by the Flyers with the 20th overall pick in the 2012 draft, was a surprise addition to the training camp roster this year. Laughton has been playing for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL since being drafted and his production with them is a big reason he is now being given a tryout for the big league team. |

Speaking of laughter, you ask me to explain my position and when I do, you then reply with LOL says who. I'll do the same with your position here, which is wrong, say who? Teams shy away from using a 9 game tryout because they don't want to jerk young players around. The more stable a players assignment is, the better it is for development of a young player. A young player who is not ready for the NHL, who is thrust into the NHL, can be overwhelmed and it can damage his confidence and mental outlook and set a player back.
Fair response đź‘Ź
The player has already gotten that view in pre-season and in camp. As has the team. Remember, if he's just getting a 9 game tryout, that means that his play has not been at the level where the team feels he is fully ready for the NHL.
Disagree, maybe this is the Canadian in me put in hockey 🏒 being pushed 🫸 helps it really does. Maybe that's why Canada makes the best hockey players.
But the reason why I want to see a 9 game is because I don't think he looked out of place in preseason and think a longer look at stronger competition might be beneficial to both parties
I sure did but that does not support giving an 18 year old player a 9 game tryout. - MJL
No you are correct it doesn't but I would assume that you might want to see a better sample size.
Worst case we send him back to Guelph ( which I'll be happy because Guelph is about 20 min away from me)
Which brings me to a random point that you might not have had the privilege of seeing, is watching him last year he really was the best player on his team who is considerable less skilled then him, and if he had better talent around him his production would be a lot better.
(Not a knock on you, just I had the privilege to watch him a lot last year(

I don't support the use of a 9 game stint for any other reason than as a tool to use to determine if a player is going to make the team or not. Not as a reward or to gain experience or for any other reason. |

Ok I respect your reasoning, and you don't think at this moment he might be the second best center we have. (In total package) |

No, not even close. It's really not fair to judge a player on one game but from what I saw last night and what I've read about him. Luchanko is not ready for the NHL right now so how could he be the 2nd best center we have?

I don't want him to slow down. I want him to learn to make plays offensively with more pace and to use his elite skating ability more. Not that there won't be times to slow the play down but overall, he needs to play more at his top end speed. - MJL
didn't explain it well enough, I want him making plays at speed, I want him to be able to take a bump and still maintain full possession. The slow down is once in the zone, still using his quickness but slow the game down with possession. Watching him, you can see him getting in the zone but he would lose the puck due to rushing the play, that is something that will come in time and going back to junior, getting big minutes, it will be huge for him, he will learn to handle the puck at speed and control the play in the O zone.

Because it's the Flyers. They want to show everyone how smart they are when they passed on Buium.
He clearly stated he wouldn't do it if he were the Flyers. - MBFlyerfan Everyone already sees why they drafted him. The guy looks like a stud. The difference between Jet and some other kids trying to make the league at 18 is he in tremendous physical condition, he can fly which will help make up for a lot of mistakes, hes good on draws already and he can kill penalties right now in the nhl at a high level. He is also incredibly mature. In short, he will help the team get better. They are still rebuilding so making the team better is not the primary goal. We all get that.
People want to argue that his offense could sputter and thus negatively impact his growth and I think that is valid. What I think is more valid is just his age and that’s part of the reason why drafting him at that spot made sense. He is incredibly young. Imagine the player we will have 9 or months from now. He will still be 18. That’s nuts... When comparing Jet to others in his draft class you have to think about what level the player will be at - at the same age. From that perspective, the pick looks pretty good, but again his age would be my concern in keeping him. I don't see why he can't play 9 games though. Why not. If he is amazing then keep him. If not. That's ok. It appears we have Brindy with a jet pack up his tookus here and thats a pretty good player.

I understood what you're saying. I just think it's the opposite. I think he needs to play with more pace when he has the puck on the O zone. There are certainly going to be times when the right play is to slow the play down and draw defenders to you to create openings for your teammates. I want him attacking defenders with speed. One of the knocks against Luchanko is that he does not use his top speed enough when attacking.

Personally I think overall game is better then frost unpopular opinion and definitely not shared, but frost is still doing dumb stuff like trying to dance around at center ice and gives up the puck.

from elsewhere:
Friedman:
-heard Kolosov may think there is a clearer path to the NHL than was shown to him last season
-he has a signed contract here and while there’s no official agreement with the KHL, there is an understanding to honor each others contracts
-expected to play preseason games
-believes there will be an option open to him to return home if he’s not in the NHL by a certain time this season (which I take to mean he’s in the league, not going back and forth) - hello it's me 2050
The last point was not confirmed neither by Kolosov's agent nor by Russian sport media

FROM WHAT I SAW. I have only seen him play one pre season game.
Did you watch last night? Who stood out more last night as a player? Frost or Luchanko. Frost has shown to be a solid two way player at the NHL level. As of now, Luchanko is not on Frost's level and it is unfair to expect him to be.

I get what you are saying on the surface. But I disagree that he is good on draws or can "kill penalties in the NHL at a high level". I sure do hope he becomes that player, but right now we have to slow our roll and keep in mind he had played in 2 games against mostly minor league players and prospects. And yes, he may be mature, for an 18 year old. We have to stop over valuing this kid based on what we have seen so far. If he were dominating these games against inferior competition I would be more receptive to him staying. But he isn't dominating, he is holding his own against relatively weak competition.

The Luchanko has earned a spot on the team discourse really takes me back.
https://www.nj.com/flyers..._topic_can_18-year_o.html - Feanor
Not really. Completely different. Laughton never had the upside. Says in the article Laughton would be used on the 4th line. Luchenko would not Flyers philosophy has somewhat changed since then. Flyers have more skill on their 3rd line than seasons past. One could also argue Laughton hit his ceiling. He was never seen as a top 6 FWD

Your assessment of Frost and his hockey sense is not accurate. Frost stood out in the game, as he should against weak competition. Luchanko was just okay. Luchanko is not ready for the NHL so how can he be the team's second best center?

Scouting reports for Laughton back in 2012 had him about the same projection as Luchanko. 2nd line center upside. Both were or are more known for their all around play and defensive ability rather than being know for their offensive flash. One major difference is that Laughton was known more for toughness than Luchanko while being an inferior skater to Luchanko

People wanting to rush a mid first round pick into the NHL because he looks physically ready at 18 is completely the same. Laughton and Luchanko also had similarly average production in Junior.
