Apparently Drysdale has to learn how to play.
Not that I disagree, it's just funny the way he said it.
And I also agree that Risto is a Flyers defenseman. - MBFlyerfan
A Flyers Defenseman of all time! He has had a good preseason.

one needs to go more than the other though, IMO.
amazes me how this administration "bows" to them for lack of a better word. Much like Hussein Obama did. |

Was something along the lines of he new the Defensive end needed work but didnt think it would need as much work as it did. DeAngelo was also was not very receptive to Torts methods as was Hayes. Hence why they are gone.

It's a very small sample of games that I have seen for a still very young player. Not fair to really pigeon hole him on that small sample. I can also see why they were enamored with him. Smart two way player with speed. What I didn't see was elite skill. I think he will be a pretty good player for the Flyers but I didn't see a player with star potential. Which is what they desperately need. Time will tell. Luchanko will no doubt rise in the prospect ranks. Right now though, from what I've seen, Buium is rated in the top dozen or so of NHL prospects. With #1 defenseman potential. The Flyers passed on him and reached for Luchanko. - MJL
I can't argue with the belief that Buium is a top prospect, whether he'll be a number one is to be determined. Admittedly, I've never seen the kid play.
And I can't argue that the Flyers reached for Jett, if the experts are to be given their due. Again, I've never seen Jett play before recently.
It's just hard for me to fathom why so many teams passed on a #1 d-man. If it is widely believed that Zeev has the potential to be the next Makar/Q. Hughes, why was he the 6th D picked this year? That's where I wonder.

speculation. Torst didn't like that they were popular in the "room" and didnt see eye to eye. that rubbed poor torts the wrong way.
funny part about JD is torts had a big say in them trading for JD. |

I don't think the expectation for Buium is to be the next Makar. As a nugget, When Dallas took Heiskanen, Sakic in Colorado was pissed and disappointed that he had to take Makar.

The rest of the quote was that he needs to learn to play D in the NHL since hasn't played a lot of games.

But it was one bad season. You dont make roster decisions based on 1 year. He didnt show any signs of declining, he was just bad - xShoot4WarAmpsx

To clarify, I don't think the Flyers made a bad pick in Luchnko. I think he will be a good player for the Flyers. I just think they passed up the higher potential player.

oh I know... but I am not buying the "they were too popular in the room and Torts didn't like that" nonsense. they're gone because they suck, not because Torts had a vendetta against them.

Despite being only 22, he has played 147 games averaging nearly 20 min/game so i don't think it's fair to say he hasn't played a lot of games. That's nearly 2900 minutes of ice time in the NHL.
Not saying he should be a finished product but he's been playing in the deep end for 4 years and the only reason he doesn't have more games played is his propensity for significant injuries. Not to mention he's been practicing against NHL dmen and coached by NHL coaches those 4 years. Also, the way ANH plays defense is different than the way PHI plays defense which probably has an impact but since systems don't matter that won't be mentioned. |

Some will still blame Torts.
Tony D could put up points but is +/- was not good and he loved to be in the penalty box.
I don't think Hayes liked being called out by Torts and did the Quiet Quit thing. It jut seemed when January of 23 hit he just didn't seemed to be motivated

I'm always a proponent not of age but of experience from games played. 147 NHL games is not a lot for a defensman. It's less than two full seasons. I have no doubt that the current Flyers coaching staff can teach Drysdale how to defend better but have zero faith that they can coach him in transition and offensive play. Which are really the biggest keys to a top defenseman

Hayes in January is in the midst of a career offensive season. Then Tortorella gets a hard on for him and demoted him in ice time and down in lines. His production went south. That's quitting?
