Also scared. I think Igor is probably only worth 9 mil per year, and we're going to pay him north of 11. Giving our opponents an extra 2 mil + of market value cap space to improve their rosters over ours. This contract is just coming at poopty timing for us.

That's an interesting way to phrase it. When I read it like that, I'm not so sure where I stand.
"Igor is only worth about 9 mil per year."
I feel like it would be fair to say that he is certainly worth more than that, when he lifts this team from Metro wild card level to President's Trophy contender.
While, on the other side of the coin I see the point of those talking about games played.
In those 55 games, Igor's performance plays a much larger role in the outcome than any one skater. And in terms of minutes played per season, a starting goalie still comes in at around double that of a 22 minute per game skater.
I'm starting to feel like it is fair to say that goalie salaries have been stagnant and now that they are set to catch up, we just happen to have the best tender in the game.

The idea of "The Cap is going up anyway" idea bit us in the ass with Panarin, pandemic or not. You cannot spend stupidly.

Igor has had 3 average save percentage years and 2 way above average years, the only saving grace in my mind is that he steps up in the playoffs and has always been the Rangers best player.

This will be a tough one to call, Id say 10-11 Id be comfortable with.

Why is it Panarins contract that has (frank)ed us and not, say, Trouba

I get the impression he used Bread as an example. You're right, it's just as much Trouba's and formerly Goodrow's and any other that is higher than we could have gotten away with.

But Panarin produces. We can argue about the playoffs, and sure he could be better, but he’s still about a point per game post season. That’s why you pay him. That’s why you pay Shesty.

I'm not sure how to rationalize why I place it at 9, I just feel like that's his value compared to the numbers hellebyuck, swayman, etc. are at, and the value a goalie provides in winning a cup. Imo we need to find a way to possess the puck more and get to the inside in the playoffs to win, not rely on our PP and star goalie to win it for us. Not sure paying our goalie north of 11 gets us closer to that goal, as much as I love shesty and acknowledge he's been our best playoff performer the past 3 years.

When we signed Panarin, he was a top 10 player in the league but was the second highest paid player in the league behind Mcdavid. IMO that throws off you salary structure. Last year Panarin was the first time he cracked the top 5. So his salary finally reflected his production.

In the playoffs he has played 46 games for the Rangers he has 12 goals and 23 assists. 35 points and the majority of the points are on the PP (5 goals) 12 assists) (17 points) and against first round opponents. So he has about 18 points 5v5 in 46 games for the Rangers.

Make of it whatever you want to think. This isnt my opinion, these are facts.

Trouba makes $8m and could be replaced by Mancini making $7m less.

So you would put all of your faith in a player who has yet played a game in the NHL over a hard hitting feared defense man, who granted is over paid but is respected??? This is a position where the window is slowing closing on this core.

Im sorry I wouldnt. I think the Rangers have a better chance at a Cup with Trouba over Mancini.

I just think the focus on our two best players (Panarin and Shesty) as ones with contracts/upcoming contracts that are problems for our team is nonsensical when you have Trouba making $8m. It’s more than the $$ for you i believe

You have to focus on your best players, its up to them to lead the way. Trouba leads the way, if he doesnt knock Crosby out in the layoffs, the Rangers probably lose in the first round.

Yes Troubas contract is a headache now but we knew it will would have been when we signed him. Players come here for the payday but havent been able to win.

Giving Igor an 8 year deal will bring him to 38 when its over. 11m per for 8 years will be a scary thought.

Makes more sense knowing that. Surprised he already requires waivers. Hopefully Berard doesn’t too.

Cap will always be an issue. Don't think there is a team that doesn't have some dead weight money, or a contract gone sour. It is also difficult to manage the cap when a market reset is done on some positions. The goalie market salaries have shifted. Cost of 50pt middle six players has gone up as well. If this continues, it will force teams to invest in developing players more than signing FAs, when that happens the salaries will stagnate a bit and the cycle continues.

I am curious to see how Trouba plays with less minutes. My guess is he will be a bit better over all, as his style of play and mental lapses cannot support the minutes he played last year.

Should be opening night roster. Happen to like this. Wonder how Carrick plays out. He seems like the first one who can be replaced

Kreider - Zib - Smith
Panarin - Trocheck - Laf
Cuylle - Chytil - Kakko
Edström - Carrick - Rempe

Miller - Fox
Schneider - Trouba
Jones - Mancini

Congrats Nick. Don't force them into Rangers fandom and misery, let them choose it themselves.
