Phillips on waivers
If claimed or sent down, roster at 22, as everyone else assigned to Rockford previously is still assigned - LAHawk
Not a shocker IMO. Good chance he doesn't get claimed. |

Could be that Levshunov will get some games so they can see how he plays.
Korchinski, Del Mastro were sent back down today too. |

He could be staying up and Kaiser could be going down too. Allan has more of the physical tools for NHL hockey. |

Hayes hasn’t played one game as a pro. If he was close to making the NHL, he wouldn’t of been one of the first cuts in camp - LAHawk
Will see if he is an
Option after he plays part of season in AHL. I am not predicting, just saying we might have someone who can come up and help sooner than expected |

Maybe. They need one more Dman for this road trip, can’t go out west with just six Dmen. |

Yo, Angotti Wiz and all you Floridians. Looks like that storm has turned into a hurricane and took a hard right turn and looks to sideswipe most of Florida...... Fingers crossed and prayers said for you guys.
Damn, 2 of those mothers in a week!! |

Hawks signed a guy named Austin Strand to a PTO yesterday. He played in last night's game. 27yo about 35 NHL games. Definitely a depth piece. Maybe he's the 7D for a while?
I have a feeling Kaiser will be out a while with his illness. Lev is still a couple of weeks away too and likely to get his game legs back in Rockford to start
Efit-Strand released from the pto and assigned to Rockford. Must have signed an AHL contract? |

If Phillips not claimed, he will be the 7th. If he is, I can see KKcoming on the trip. Is Martinez healthy? Haven’t seen him since the first exhibition game.
Hawks can always get Tinordi back |

Everytime i watch him lately even last night, he just looks the part and he owns his space, something Phillips needs to do and many of the younger dmen do. |

Thought if a waived player isn't claimed he's stuck in the minors for a while. |

I would like to see them just stick Reichel on Di ckinsons line and just let Jason be his coach on the ice. He looks very tentative out there. I think its at a point that the coaches need to shut up and give the kid a line he knows he will be on every night and Jason will mentor him during shifts and between shifts. - BetweenTheDots
Being with the same mates night after night, practicing with them, talking with them, watching film together and the familiarity that brings is never ever a bad thing.
Agree Dots, but I don't care if you're on a different line every week you need to get your nose over the puck and linemates should never affect that. .... TT doesn't do that nearly enough and the result is they move him around hoping something works/clicks for him and that exacerbates the problem(s)..
Really, the definition of an enigma.

I think he's just stuck until they place him on waivers again to play on the parent club, he can be claimed again when that happens. |

The 27 yr old 6ft 3in 200lb RIGHT shot did indeed show well last night and the other preseason games too. ...... Really nice piece to play on your AHL squad with seemingly the ability to fill in a game or two here and there at the NHL level and not get overwhelmed.

If unclaimed, Hawks still have 30 days to send him down. If they keep him after 30 days, they would have to put him on waivers again. |

I do think that's probably the concern with Bedard/Kurashev playing together, they struggled in the defensive end last year, even with a decent 2 way player on their line. (Both in the NHL top 10 total goals against while they are on the ice at 5 on 5.)
It's clearly been on the mind of the GM and the coach as they went out and got other wingers to play top line and moved Kurashev to another line.
With a talented offensive player like Bedard, should he need a guy like Kurashev to be successful? Or should he be able to produce with solid vet wingers who have a more complete game?
The Hawks need that Bedard line to be closer to (ideally above) 50% GF/GA at 5 on 5 to become an actual competitive team, because the other lines don't have the offense to make up the difference. By the numbers, Bedard and Kurashev offensive production together at 5 on 5 wasn't even that great compared to top offensive players. I hope they keep them separate for now, let them maybe link up on the PP if the first unit needs a shake up. - breadbag
Bedard will get the prime minutes/situations/salary going forward. When will it be that we say he needs to make players around better and not that he needs specific players to do so?
And am I wrong in saying that Kurashev is defensively aware/good enough that he is an average defensive forward? .... The fancies you quote is 98% due to Bedard. Anyone near him last yr was destined to horrid fancies.
The Dom guy at The Athletic, the fancy stat guy, wrote this month that Bedard had the worst defensive metrics of ANY forward going back to 2007. Any player on the ice with him will be dragged into that fancy stat abyss.
And, IIRC hasn't LR sung the praises of Kurashev's 2 way game? ... I think LR's problem with bumping Kurashev up on L1 takes him from 2C and maybe D!ckinson up to 2C so you need a new 3C weakening L3. Lotta ripple effect but there is little doubt that he and Bedard have something going together.

No. Nothing fancy in what I was referencing or quoting. It's quite simple, Bedard and Kurashev together resulted in about twice as many goals against than for at 5 on 5. 28 goals for and 52 against. It's part of why Bedard and Kurashev were scored on more than most other NHL forwards league wide.
If you want to talk about the advanced metrics, Kurashev's got weaker when he didn't play with Bedard actually. Corsi, Fenwick, Goals For%, Expected Goal For% all worse when he didn't play with Bedard.
I don't recall much praise of his 2-way play, there might have been some one off comments, but honestly actions speak much louder than words. With all the injuries the Hawks sustained last year, Kurashev rarely saw any defensive responsibilities in deployment from the coach. Watching him play, you don't really see strong defensive play either, so really we have.
The stats point to weak defensive play.
The coaches usage of the player points to low defensive trust.
The eye test confirms the two things above IMO.

Once a player is placed on waivers, other teams have 24 hours to place a claim. If no team places a claim on the player, he can be officially assigned to the team’s minor league affiliate in the AHL.
That said, a team doesn’t have to place a player in the minors. In 2011, the Philadelphia Flyers placed Nikolay Zherdev on waivers and no team made a claim. The Flyers then had 30 days to assign Zherdev to the Adirondack Phantoms. The Flyers chose not to do this, and after the 30 days expired, Zherdev had to stay on the team. |

My problem with all these stats is teams could really dictate who was going to match up against them since those 2 were our biggest threats to score every night. I'm hoping with some more NHL talent in the line up even if these teams concentrate on shutting down Bedard they pay for it with some match up advantages on the other lines.
I have to admit i really like how chippy Bedard is getting with players taking liberties. |

Easier to sneak him through waivers now (when lots of players are waived) than later. He'll probably stay up if not claimed. |
