That really isnt. There is no way to predict Luchenko would make the team. They would have had to have moved Laughton before even drafting Laughton. Im not really certain there was a huge market for him. Even know we dont know how long he will be with the team.
I dont really know what is best for him. He could very much excel with the Flyers. We really dont know. Briere has also stated he isnt sure yet either as he hasnt played against full NHL teams yet.
It isnt as if Luchenko will be limited to a defensive role like Couturier was. Couturier played with guys like Rinaldo, Talbot and Read back in a day where the Flyers still treated the 3rd line like the pre lockout days. 3rd line these days are fiilled with skill guys.
The only thing that can hurt his development is having Luchenko on a tight leash. My expectation is that Luchenko likely gets a longer leash, Luchenko has Torts favour right now. Best way to get better as a player is to play against better players. It is one thing if you get dominated and look like you dont belong but if you are able to hold your own and pout up a fight, you will improve against better competition
Whether this is good for Jett is completely up to him. - xShoot4WarAmpsx
Laughton will be with the team until his contract expires at a minimum. Then potentially an extension.
Read was a good player for several years. How often did Couturier play with Rinaldo?

I could be wrong, but when Torts was playing Cates big minutes at center two seasons ago were you not bashing him? Now it seems you complaining that Cates is not in the top 12? Cates has limited offensive ability and is frankly slow, no matter what forward position he plays. Honestly the Flyers can trip over players like Cates if they wanted to. I would rather see Luchanko get a shot. Hathaway is a good bottom 6 forward, I would rather see him over Cates also. - jd250
It amazes me what I have to explain to you. So, in Tortorella's eyes, Cates went from a player that he relied on for key minutes to a player that is no longer in the lineup. Do you not see the grand canyon gap there? What I bashed Tortorella for is putting the needs of the team before what is best for a young player on a non-contending team. As I have explained many times. Cates offensive ability is not tailored to the center position for the following reasons. Cates is not a player who at the center position can transition the puck. He is not a player who can Carry the puck, drive off defenders and create openings for wingers and make plays with the puck to set up linemates. Nor is the kind of player that can be a scoring center and jump into holes in coverage and score on passes from a playmaking winger. He does not have the puck skills to play center offensively in the NHL. Cates strengths as a player, is that he is good defensively. Probably the 2nd best defensive forward on the team. He can at a high level defensively both as a center and as a winger. Offensively his strengths are as a F1 winger on the forecheck, very strong in that area and in getting to the net for plays at the net. You're completely wrong in stating that Cates is slow. That's just your fall back position when you don't know any better and you decide not to like a player. He was a promising player but has probably been hurt by Tortorella and his mis-use as I predicted back when Tortorella was overusing him at center. Saying you prefer Hathaway over Cates is asinine, seeing that the Flyers are a non-contender and supposedly rebuilding. With Harthaway being 32, soon to turn 33 and Cates is 25. Hathaway should not have been re-signed. |

I think the Flyers will see how Luchanko does and if he can handle himself and actually develop, they might trade Laughton. After all I’m sure Laughton is not going to be happy on the 4th line. - jd250
Do you not pay attention? As is well known and confirmed by reliable sources such as Bill Meltzer, Laughton is not a player who makes waves or is going to be unhappy about where in the lineup he is playing. Laughton knows that it's going to change frequently throughout the season. Especially with a coach like Tortorella. |

think how bad that would negatively effect the "room". the players begged danny boy not to trade him at the deadline.
can you imagine going to your GM asking please don't trade laughton. bunch of losers. then having the GM listen.
So for this to happen he has to stay all year correct? again they have showed no inclination to move him, in fact the opposite. |

That's the kind of "room" the Flyers have. Players giving their life for the good of the team. - mickel25
This team in my mind are going to be really bad or the 2006 Buffalo Sabres. I understand those Sabres teams had some names but never really a superstar. We all know there is no elite talent on this team but in my opinion the Flyers have decent players sprinkled at forward. I think Konency, Farabee and Tippett are good. I think Foerster and Brink are going to be good. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Frost yet. I think Michkov is a superstar whether his legacy begins now or 3 seasons from now.
Or we could just suck. I did like the pre season puck movement in most of the games though. |

The room will do as he is told. He will not complain. That’s what leaders do.
Much respekt to the room |

I'm really hoping that the plan is just to give Luchanko a few games and then send him back. Although I haven't seen a single legit sources saying that. - MJL
I’ve had the chance to see him up close in a few preseason games. Kid has been impressive. With that said I think he should go back to Jrs and get a ton of minutes and try to develop the offensive side of his game. He has all the tools to be a good 3C but if he is gonna reach that 2 way 2C scoring threat I am not sure of their development plan.
I feel like this is all Torts being enamored with a player. I am not thinking about this year. I am thinking of what is best for the kids development long term.

Love watching Dunn and Oleksiak play well and produce over the last few years for the Krakin....Screamed to the high heavens to get both but we were given Risto and TDA instead and - a ton of assets....Thanks Chuck |

You dont think Briere tested the market on TK? Part of the way you determine a players value is at least to dip your toe into the trade pool to gauge league interest. This happens all the time and I'm sure Briere did the same with TK. - 26912 PP

I agree with you. For Luchanko to develop the areas of his game that he needs to, is going to be difficult for him at the NHL level.

My real point here is that even without Luchanko making the team Cates could play Laughton's role. The Flyers also have plenty of options for 4th line winger. The Room should have been traded. - mickel25
Yes but without Luchenko, Laughton would be in Luchenko's spot and Cates would be in on the 4th line. If Luchenko sticks the whole season someone will need to be moved. Id rather move Laughton than Cates. Id probably rather move Laughton before Poehling too.

Read was a good player for several years. How often did Couturier play with Rinaldo? - furio16
Often. Read was a good player but he was a top 6 player during that time. When he was playing with Coots, he was at the end of his career where he had fallen off a cliff. I think Talbot played with Coots more than Read did.

Would love to see some stats how often Couturier played with Rinaldo. I do recall it that much at all.
I thought Read was with him a lot; when Read was productive. |

Rinaldo was a 4th line player. |

so did they get a 1st for walker or did they get a first for cap space? - corduroy
this is a very good point they traded 2 assets (Walker and cap space) and only received one asset in return. To me it was not a good trade. Now the 3 stooges will say that someone had to go the other way - fine, then get an additional asset for it |

There is no spin. Its a fact they traded assets and now have 6 picks in the top 50 in the draft. Isnt that a good thing? - 26912 PP
It is but some ppl think they need to bottom out for 7 years to be considered rebuilding, the truth is there is more ways then 1 to rebuild |
